Help! Muffy had her babies a week early 57 days and they are weak & cold and gasping a little how can I get them to nurse? Dian |
Oh my....Sorry I can't help....bumping this up for you. |
Keep them warm by placing a heating pad under their box, if you have not already. Nor really sure what you mean be gasping....how long ago did she have them? You will have to forcefully (but carefully) latch them on to get them to start nursing if they won't do it on their own. |
Bumping for a experienced breeder to help |

Stacy you rock - and GOOD LUCK with your babies !! You must be so scared :( :( :( ....how is mommy doing ? |
She had them early this morn when I checked at 7:45 she had 2 cold barely alive they are wrigglin a little , now but no strenght to suck am expressing a little milk from mom and have been able to put a couple of drops on their tonque, every 10-20 min but they get cold so quick they are on heating pad, but I can hear their lungs are not entirely clear have been raising them above my head and swinging them down to help clear the lungs and yes both hands snugly around all of them, Is there something I can do to keep themfrom getting dehydrated? |
did you call for the help? how are they doing? |
I have tried numerous times and get a busy signal, still too weak to suckle.. |
Do not place them directly on the heating pad or wrap them in it. Keep trying to call. Try to call you vet as well. |
do you have any other replacement milk on hand? I would warm some and put a little drop in their mouth. |
I think I would call the vet asap |

you can give them warm water with some white karo a drop at a time with a eye dropper until you get the replacer...or make your own!! WEAK PUPPY BOOSTER This formula is meant to be used on newborns who are chilled, weak or otherwise compromised. This formula should be administered every 1-2 hours (or more often) by stomach tube and the puppy should be warmed slowly. Once the puppy begins to maintain a normal body temperature, regular feeding can resume. NEVER FEED A CHILLED PUPPY MILK REPLACER. 8oz. lactated ringers solution or sterilized water 1 tablespoon white Karo syrup or white sugar (do not use honey) OR Substitute plain, unflavoured Pedialyte Mix ingredients and warm to body temperature. Preferred administration is stomach tube (to ensure correct dosage). Feed ½ cc per 2 oz. of body weight once per hour. If puppy is very weak, you may half the dosage and feed twice as often. This formula should be followed up with milk replacer as soon as the puppy is maintaining normal body temperature. This formula should not be fed exclusively for more than 8 hours. |
once you get the pups warm and the mixture above in them.... here is a home made replacer but as stated above DO NOT FEED TO A CHILLED PUP!!! EMERGENCY PUPPY MILK REPLACER 1 cup whole milk (cow or goat) 1 pinch table grade salt 3 egg yolks - no whites 1 tablespoon corn oil ¼ teaspoon liquid vitamins Blend and serve at 95° - 100° or skin temperature |
