whelping box? hello, i just wondered what you breeders use to line your whelping box. I used newspapers for Silk and it was a mess. I have one of those under the bed storage pans that is just right. i put it in the corner of the x-pen at the foot of my bed and covered the top of the x-pen with a dark blanket so she would feel secure. Then I lined the pan with newspaperss which she promptly shredded up. Then her water broke and it was all wet and nasty ans she was standing up in it . i placed fresh papers in and she did the same thing again. I am thinking newspapers weren't such a good idea but what do you breeders use? I have two that will be coming in heat this month and next so I want to learn from my mistakes with Silk. Thanks |
I use disposable hospital bed pads, basically potty pads without any scent. |
I am not a breeder yet, but have thought about the same question. I found a whelping pad, it is like a big blanket, all the moisture passes through it so you would have to have pads or whelping liners under it. But it is suppose to keep the mom and puppies clean and dry while all the moisture goes through to the pads. They also have disposable whelping box liners. Let me know what you think of them. I found both of these at JB wholesale pet supplies. Here is a link for both of them. http://www.jbpet.com/Shopping/catego...BoxPads&page=1 |
I use a plastic under bed storage box too. I line it with newspapers and put an old towel pr two on top. Then I throw in some of the wash cloths you can buy at Wal Mart. I think there's 20 in a package for 2 or 3 dollars. It worked real well. I then had a waste basket with a plastic bag in it and that's where I put the soiled rags and then just dumped in the washer. |

We used a large Rubbermaid box with a opening cut out on one side that was about 5 inches from the bottom. We lined the bottom with a towel, then a disposable pad while whelping, now we have just the towel and I bought about 10 baby blankets that are thin fleece at Walgreens, they were $ 1.00 each. I put 2-3 in at time so they can be "fluffed up" by the little digging housekeepers, lol |
