Anyone use Dicalcium Phospate? I thought calcium supplementing might be a good idea during a Yorkie's pregnancy, but the more I read, the more I don't believe it to be true. Are there any breeders out there that do supplement with dicalcium phospate? I bought it but now am half afraid to use it. |
darn, I spelled "phosphate" incorrectly both times. Anyway, I'd appreciate a little response here. I am leaning toward not using it. |
I heard you are not suppose supplement pregnant females with any calcium as it will cause health problems for the puppies and the mother. But I can't answer your question, so I just wanted to bump your thread up so someone who knows the answer will respond and I am also curious to what others have to say about this. |
I don't believe in giving pregnant females a calcium supplement. The majority of information says that supplementing during pregnancy will actually cause low calcium levels during lactation. I think you will find that dicalcium phosphate is included in your dog food and by just switching to the puppy formula (which has double the amount of the adult formula) during pregnancy and lactation is sufficient. |
Thanks. I read it in a breeding book....however, it isn't only for toy breeds. I researched it more online and am not going to use it. It probably is good for a large breed carrying 10 pups though. |
