Could I have over reacted??? After re-thinking the birth of my last litter I think I may have reacted to quick. Zoey's water sac appeared and just layed there and then nothing. For about an hour. So i called the Vet and he had said if nothing happens in 20 more minutes to call him. Nothing happened so we ended up going in. She was given 2 shots of Oxitosin and still nothing. She never went into "heavy" labor, she just push a few times. Do you think being my first time I panicked too quick and should have waited??? She never went into the real heavy pantying and hard pushing labor. I'm now thinking I may have caused an un nessary c section. What are your thoughts??? Also, since she was given the section, can she deliver if I bred her again? |
I can't answer your question but thought I would bump it up for you so someone will see it and respond.:) |
Question Did you overreact? A big NO!! The sac was out for close to 2 hrs...from time of appearing and getting to the vet..she had two shots and NO strong labor..if she has NO strong labor after oxyie shots, the chances of her free whelping are slim to none. Removing the pups by a section was the only way IMO to achieve a live birth... You can not do much with no contractions, you can not control the amount and strength of the contractions,it is out of the breeders hands, if the oxyie does not work, you are dead in the water....I would have done exact as you did..best wishes PS..I have had a number of girls need sections and then have a normal delivery. Charlotte is a perfect example..she had very mild contractions the first whelping, nothing increased them..so she was sectioned..later went on to free whelp 3 times. Many sections are needed in the case of an oversized pup, dozens of reason that may never occur again...then you get one who will need a second section and in that case I spay after teh second time. |
i questioned my actions yesterday also. Did i panic and jump the gun and have an unnecessary section? silk's water broke and she had strong contractions. I never did see the water sac at all. All my support for help was gone. I was alone. Silk went to Sleep . Finally, I did reach a breeder friend that told me to head to the vet. I called and they said to bring her in. he already had the paper out for me to sign for the section but I asked for a shot first. we waited thirty minutes and nothing. We had two puppies in there that I knew had to come out because the water had been broke so long. One puppy was deformed, in a dry sac and already dead. the little girl behind him would have died and maybe Silk also. they are both fine. So I made the right move. I also had Silk spayed due to her age. That had always been my intention anyway, to breed her once or maybe twice then spay so after yesterday's experience, she was spayed right there along with her section. |

So once the water sac appears.....how long should you wait before doing something??? I'm scared to breed her again. Where you scared to breed them a 2nd time after a first section? How long did you wait to breed then again after the section? I'm glad to hear I did the right thing. I just didn't want to think I casued her troubles with the section and the cardiac arrest she had with the anatesia . (spelling?) Its all so scary! |

whelping Sugar's mom..I would have done the same as you did...the chance of a good result were getting slimmer IMO...good luck Breny...from the first appearance of a sac depends...if she is strongly contracting I will wait 30 mins to an hour..I can not tell you exact because it is like a cook who does not use a recipe...you have to get a feel for what to do when..it comes with experince. I want a shot at 30 mins with the sac out if she stops laboring..and a section after 2 shots and 30 mins of strong labor..JMO Am I scared again to breed her..I am scare to breed a girl who free whelps her entire life..breeding is scary..one day all is well, the next all is a mess. I wait a year depending on time between heats. |

Yorkie Rose, I never did see a sac. All i saw was the wet box suddenly. i put dry bedding in it and turned around and it was wet again. She was panting hard then vomited the huge amount of green bile then stopped everything. i turned away for just a couple of minutes. was there a sac when the water broke or was that the water from the dry sac that the little boy was in? |
sac The sac may well have broken inside..not usual and then you get a dry foot or nose poking out...you might have lost your baby girl if you waited any longer.. |

puppy Are you tube feeding...if not you might go by the vet twice daily for good feedings, many of the vet techs do it, if you can not...just keep her on the teets and the milk should come in..seriously, I know it can happen, but I have never had a mom without enough milk....but you can hand feed if need be.. The reason I perfer tube feeding is, you know they are full and only have to do it every 4 hrs...good luck |
