When do I start to worry? Or better yet, when do I need to act? I took my dog to the vet for an xray yesterday. Starting at 230 this morning she was having her babies. The vet said he counted 4 babies. The last one is still attached to the afterbirth inside mama. I am afraid to cut the umbilical for fear that she won't pass the afterbirth. My mentor will have some medicine to inject to cause contractions but she is about an hour away. My vet won't be in his office until 9am. What should I do? BTW, my mentor doesn't know we are having puppies this morning. She wasn't due till the 23rd. Sylvia |
i would get her to the emergency clinic asap. congrats on the babies..... |
I dont know I am not a breeder but i am bumping this up so you get an answer hopefully |
birth Do you mean the pup is out and still attached with placenta is inside..if so this is not a problem. Simple clamp and cut..the placenta can easily be removed with the after whelping shot..or a simple massage of the uterus... You can also try to gently pull the placenta..hold it with a dry cloth for a good grip...most slide out..if not clamp and cut it. Never had a placenta remain if a shot was given or a massage..it is like removing sausage from a casing..slide it out by hand ... Good Luck |
Thank you, Pat. That's exactly what I meant. It took a long time (2 1/2 hrs)but the placenta did pass finally. I'm so glad to have that helpful hint for when and if next time. Thanks again. Sylvia |
Sylvia, I'm so glad that everything worked out. I can bet that it's a scary thing when unusual things happen the first time. Now you know... |
I'm glad you got an answer! Congrats on the litter! |
great job. so what did you have??? boys girls??? |
Great news to hear.....I figure if the pup is out, we are home free...it is the firmly stuck ones made us old before our time..think about it, human birth and canine birth have many equals..they cut the cord with human babies and the placenta is dealt with later..sometimes with pups who stay attached too long, you have to work with what you see. Best wishes |
Congrats! Can't wait to see pics. Hope all are doing well. |
Congrats! and so glad you got quick advice from the people here! What a wonderful online community this is proving to be! |
My yorkie had five pups this morning, the last one at 6:57 am. I only counted three placentas, so I took her in as soon as the vet opened for a shot of Oxytocin. They told me it should work within 30-45 minutes. She didn't pass the last placenta until almost 1:00 this afternoon. I guess sometimes you have to let mother nature kick in, but I sure wouldn't have waited too much longer. Glad to hear yours is doing well. |
cant wait to see pics!! |
