EPT Preg test - on dogs??? One of my vet's assistants told me that I could use an EPT preg test (for humans) on Angel Baby to see if she is prenant. Do they really work on dogs? If she is, she is only 3 weeks along, as of tomorrow, but I'm so incredibly impatient. . . . Should I try to use it? Waste of money?? |
if the vet said it could be done then i think that it could (i am no expert) i have read somewhere where this can be done but someone told me "no" the preg test don't seem to be expensive now-a-days. why not try it and let us know. |
Actually it was the vet's assistant that told me. I asked the vet, and she wouldn't commit one way or the other. It's been 12 years since I used one, so I have no idea how much they are. Guess I'll stop by the drug store & see! If I decide to do it, I'll let you know the results. |
My vet did a pregnancy test on Sweet Pea and it was negative. A month later, we had 4 pups. |
Find a new vet. :cool: Of course the vet wouldn't comment...I wouldn't want to admit that I was employing someone giving that kind of info to my patients either.;) Actually, human pregnancy test are designed to detect FEMALE, as in HUMAN hormones released when pregnant, that are carried in urine. (Duh, peeing on a stick...) If I'm not mistaken, canine pregnancy hormones are carried in the blood, not the urine? Anyone know for sure off the top of their head? |
i dont know a whole lot about pregnant dogs but i do about humans - and an EPT test tests for the presence of HCG which = Human Choriogonadotropin its a hormone that is released when you are pregnant the fact that the 1st word its testing for is "human" i would go with no but like i said i dont know anything about breeding pups :) good luck tho let us know! |
go to your local dollar store they sell pregnancy tests for a dollar then you can try it and won't be out $15-$30.00 |
we did find a new vet two weeks later who x-rayed Sweet Pea and found 4 skulls. That's the best thing we found to do because then you know how many to expect! |

Ok. I paid $3.50 for one from Wal-Mart. Did the test. Absolutely NOTHING showed up in the little box. Not a "+" sign or a "-" sign. No pink lines in any direction. I guess I just need to sit back and be patient. I HATE being patient. I can't STAND it!!!! I looked back on my original thread for Gracie's pregnancy, and I see that at 3 weeks, I couldn't tell on her, either. And she is very slender, where Angel is fuller in her body. So, I guess I just need to wait. :confused: |
LOL My $1.00 Dollar General Preggy Test was DEAD RIGHT...now 6 months pregnant! ha! Actually some of the cheaper ones are better than some of the more expensive ones according to some research that has been done, the most accurate and earliest testing brand is Wal-Mart Equate brand believe it or not. As for doggie pregnancy, at 4 weeks gestation, a good vet should be able to palpitate and tell you. If she is too muscular or tense for palpatation, you can do an ultrasound if you are really that eager to know. I have a bitch who SHOULD be 3 weeks pregnant now, but is too muscular to palpitate...so we shall just wait and see! Quote:

My vet will do an x-ray at 6 weeks, but surely I'd know by that time. The x-ray, in my opinion, would be just to see how many, not just IF she were preggo. |
