Breeders Have you used Revolution on your pregnant girls? I had always used advantage with a separate heartguard pill. But I had an earmite problem. I started using revolution 7 months ago and was so pleased. It made life easier one step flea control, heartgard, and cleared up earmites in a snap. THe insert states it was tested on pregnant females on over 1oo breeds, also was used at 10 times the recommended doseage with out any ill effects. I never had a cleft palate puppy born until my last litters after starting revolution. How about 5 litters born and 4 litters were born with one cleft palate puppy. I thought it might be my new male, but the same thing happened with my tried and true stud. Bred to females who had litters with him before without ever a cleft. I have had a few failure to thrive puppies before, as breeders it happens to everyone unfortunately, I have had an inguinal hernia puppy born and the problem resolved but never cleft palates. I was able to save one of the cleft puppies but the others did not survive. I reported this to pfizers animal health group, of course they said their findings do not support birth defects, the vet I spoke with could not tell me if yorkies were one of the 100 breeds tested. But they did take my report and took the lot numbers from the revolution boxes I had used. Im not saying it was absolutely the cause but I seriously question it. I wont be using revolution on my pregnant females anymore and if the problem clears up then that will tell the story in itself. That is the only change in anything done here. No diet changes, no new cleaning supplies, no lawn treatments, no other new medications. I wanted to see if anyone has had this problem, maybe you didnt notice a cleft but the puppy was failure to thrive. If you have had this problem or its in question while using revolution, please report it to Pfizer animal health group. ph 1 212 733 2323. If you dont feel comfortable mentioning it here, its okay and I understand but if anyone suspects it could have caused a problem plz report it. Im very interested in hearing from anyone who used revolution on their pregnant females without ever a problem too! Thanks |

I have my girls on Intercepter but remove them from all chemicals before they come into Season. Will put them back on when puppies are 2 weeks old, as it deworms puppies through nursing. No problem doing it this way Mary :aimeeyork |
Any thoughts re Sentinal Flavor Tabs? My Libby is pregnant, due @ Sept 16th. We saw the vet Saturday and he asked me to continue the Sentinal, but from everything I have read here and elsewhere I worry about giving her anything. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have. |

Thanks, I will. |
My last female who was exposed to revolution during pregnancy had 4 very healthy puppies a few days ago................No clefts!!!!!!!........ She was actually treated about one week BEFORE HER MATING. Then I had problems with the litters I had treated their mothers actually DURING mid PREGNANCY, so she didnt recieve any applications. We were blessed with healthy puppies. newmommy just me, but I dont expose my pregnant bitches to any chemicals at all!! 08-16-2006 07:44 AM After my experience and what happened to my puppies...........the above post about not giving any chemicals is probably some of the best you could get. Even with the advice of a vet, I dont think I would take the chance. I truly beleive the exposure to the chemicals caused these horrible defects. Its way beyond a coincidence. |
You know what??? I got to thinking.... I did not treat Zoey for fleas while she was pregnant. But I can't remember if I gave her, her heartworm pill. I'm thinking its a great possibility that I gave it to her without thinking, but I just don't remember!!!! If I did....could this have casue my sweet special Tia?????????? |
now I'm scared oh my gosh !! my vet had me treat all my dogs for hook worm and I had 1 that was pregnant at the time, and he said it wouldn't hurt her, now I'm scared because my other female was breed this week and he also had me put all my dogs on heartguard plus said it wouldn't hurt my pg females???? NOW I'M SCARED!!!!! One is due sept. 21 and the other in Oct. I guess I should skip the Oct dose of heartguard??? Please some body help !!I"m freaking out here. |
I won't treat my females with any chemical either....even if the vet insists on it. My Tiah was very pregnant once and had just a bit of an ear infection. I took her to the vet and he gave me Otomax for her. I read the teeny tiny print enclosed and it said "DO NOT GIVE TO PREGNANT OR NURSING FEMALES" and mentioned all the birth defects that could happen....cleft palate being one of them. I give all of my dogs "Brewer's Yeast with Garlic" every day all year through. I have never had fleas until this year when I ran out of vitamins and there weren't any available at the store. Now I have a few here and there and just bath them and pick them off. I won't treat my pets with harsh chemicals whether they are male or female, pregnant or not. Thank God I've not had any serious problems. |
Gloriajean, Its a real hard call to make especially if you live in an area with alot of mosquitoes. Where I live though the mosquitoes slow down in October. I gave heartgard routinely and advantage in the past and didnt have cleft puppies. I didnt have the problem until I switched to revolution. So maybe that will make you feel better:) The problem started when I reapplied the medication in MID pregnancy too. I just wont be giving chemicals at all anymore during gestation. |
i treated muffie at the start of her pregnancy and at the end. she had 5 healthy puppies but i have heard horrible stories of terrible births which scares me to death to ever use anything again. my vet stated k9 advantage and advantix were ok to use while pregnant. i dont know???????? dam if you do, dam if you dont |
I treated mine with Revolution while they were pregnant and didn't have any problems. In fact, I did lots of reading and used it specifically because it said it was safe during pregnancy. Plus, my vet recommended it as well. I'm on the fence with this subject now. |
Fannie, Thanks for posting. Im so glad you didnt have a problem with it. |
I have used interceptor during pregnancy and nursing, with no problems, Revolution even in a NON PREGNANT dog is scary due to the fact of the liver problems associated with it...Yorkies don't have the best livers in the world. I personally would never use revolution unless in the case of scarcopic mange, or ear mites..and then would be ONE dose...not on a pregnant or nursing dog. Quote:
