Grace NOT interested in whelping box. . . ? How do you get your mama-to-be interested in the whelping box? It's all cozy with blankets & such, has a toy in it, and I put her blanket on top (the one that she sleeps on in her smaller kennel. The whelping box is actually the bottom 1/2 of my BIG outdoor dog's dog house. What do you do to get them comfortable enough to lay down & sleep in it prior to pups being born? Or is that not even necessary? |
I use a large kennel that I can lock them into. Their last few days before delivery, they spend most of their time in there. That way, they won't crawl in under something where I can't find them. Plus, I put it right by my bed at night so I can watch them throughout the night too. |
And... I just thought of something else.... They like dark places when they whelp. So they can nest up. So I drape a blanket over the kennel so they feel more enclosed. But leave a space so that I can see them good. I take them out for potty breaks and play time of course. |
Ok. I will put the top 1/2 on the dog house. I have a gate I can put up in front of it to keep her in. Good idea. I will start putting her in there at night rather than her kennel. Angel will be jealous. She will still be in her smaller kennel at night. |
I don't kennel any of my dogs, but I bought one of those pretty wicker ones for Allie to whelp in. It was dark inside like a cozy den, but was disappointed when she seemed to want nothing to do with it since she sleeps with me in bed. The night before she went into labor she went in and looked around. The next day when she started labor she went right inside just like she knew it was for her. |
I put her in the "whelping box" with the gate up, and she slept in it last night. No problem at all. In fact, I can't imagine why she WOULDN'T want to, since there is extra padding and much more room than her normal night time kennel. When my girls were younger, we tried to let them sleep with us, but, unfortunately, I was getting NO SLEEP! I am a light sleeper, and every time I moved, they moved, then it would take them 5 minutes to get comfortable again, which made ME restless & move again, which made THEM move again. . . and so on. . . . and so on. . . . You see, my marriage was more important than my dogs at that point!!! |
My bitches never never questioned where they were to have the pups. infact most times they have NOTHING to do with the whelping box until a couple days before and I would just find them napping in it. like they just knew!! |
Chizzie chose to deliver in OUR bed UNDER the covers...... After she finished whelping we put her and the new babies in the box we had prepared....where Chizzie was very content with her new family. :) |
Chloe wouldn't have anything to do with her whelping box either - until the time came. Then, she acted like she'd been there forever. I did put one of my t-shirts in with her so she'd feel like she was in bed with me where she usually sleeps. Don't know if it made a difference, but she had five beautiful pups this morning and they're all right there in the whelping area. |
