Paying for a stud fee vs. Pick of Litter I thought this forum was to promote quality AKC standard Breeding. When you show a dog, isn't it to judge breeding stock. What is wrong with wanting to pay for a breeding vs. having someone else take the best of the litter? Maybe I want to keep the best of the litter. Boy, that last reply thread was an attack on me. You don't know me. I have only one very spoiled and loved dog, Sassy. I would like to breed her to the breed standard and feel that she is a nice Yorkie specimen when compared to a lot of "reputable breeder" dogs with their long noses and long legs. |
i think the who has a stud and wants to make money comment. hopefully you can find a nice stud, i wouldn't want to give up a baby either! BUT maybe wait until her next heat that way you have plenty of time to find a reputable proven stud! |

Some just charge a fee..just check around your area for breeders. You might try the Vets offices and see if they have a list of breeders. Find a proven stud for your female. And make sure both dog are Healthy and tested for STD. Good luck on finding a stud..:) |

I am not sure what thread you are talking about, I must have missed it, but I see nothing wrong with paying a fee rather than pick of the litter. Pick of the litter is the price of a yorkie, and I think that is a very high price to pay for a stud fee. But I'd rather pay the price of a yorkie than to give up my best pup which I might want to put into my own breeding program. The owner of the stud can charge whatever they see fit, but I personally would not use one who charged POL |
Absolutely nothing wrong with paying a fee for stud service. You need to find someone that owns a stud that you like. It can sometimes take MONTHS to YEARS to find a line of dogs that you are happy with. A line that has been well established. You need to build a relationship with that stud's owner. It's hard to build that kind of relationship in less than a week's time. If you knew you were going to breed your girl, you should have started looking for a stud a long time ago. Not post a new thread that you need a stud by next week and if someone wants to make money. Whatever...best of luck to you! |

Thank you I would like to thank all that responded to this thread and say good-bye. I have seen many postings regarding "items wanted" but have been advised by admin that I can not make the request for a stud unless I'm a donating member. I did not realize that my request was breaking some kind of rule on this site. Really, money is not the issue. I'm a government official and am used to dealing with people in difficult situations. I apologize for stepping on anyone's toes. This site is too touchy for my taste. I have read many threads and there seems to be too many people ready to criticize someone, especially a newbie. I had researched a stud long before this, a year ago, but things change and the stud I had chosen is no longer available. Studs are not that hard to find but quality is. Thanks again, Cindy |
stud NEVER give back your best puppy or worst...Where do some of these breeders get their rules..there is a pet breeder near Orlando who charges $1200 for a pet stud..good luck to you. |
Hey all...I believe a stud fee is a little more fair for the dam's owner than the stud's owner...However, for the stud's owner maybe they want another yorkie in the family?...But if they just wanted pick of the litter to just sell the pup, then I wouldn't agree to it...I don't think a stud fee should cost equal to what a pup would, but it all varies. And that's up to the stud owner and dam owner to discuss. I think a Stud fee is suitable and beneficial for both. Thanks! |

Yes I agree...It's all about an agreement that both sides think are fair... |
I am curious... what if they do POL and only one puppy makes it? I have always wondered what most people would do. |

Pol I think the price of stud service has alot to do with it being one pup or two that constitutes a litter...I say one pup is a litter, but I did not charge alot for stud service, so people were more then happy to pay the fee if there was one pup and it was a POL agreement...and many people changed their mind when it came to letting the POL go..fine with me and they could pay instead. Truthfully, I do not like POL for stud service...people get so attached to their puppies..I feel bad taking one. |
Morkie's Hi - I have a full breed Yorkie and I mated her with a full breed Maltese how much should I charge for her puppies? |

When a person that is looking for a part Maltese puppy can go to a rescue center or the pound and get a puppy that is spayed/neutered, current on all shots, and save some little soul's life to boot, and pay anywhere from $25.00 - $150.00, I would say they are going to go there for their baby! They can provide a baby cheaper than you can....you will have more invested (HOPEFULLY!) in each of those babies than you will EVER be able to get back, just in well baby checks and your vaccinations.....dew claw removal is about $100.00/dog....this is just the very BASICS....if you have any problems with the whelp, like needing a c-section, that can run you anywhere from $800.00 from your own vet for a daytime emergent delivery....start at $1800.00 minimum at an ER clinic in the middle of the night. To answer your question, you will probably be able to get $150.00 to $300.00 for your babies. As you can see, you wont even BEGIN to make your money back, even if everything goes well! Welcome to the fabulous world of "get rich quick breeding"!............. NOT!!!! |
In my experiences of research and just general browsing... Maltese/Yorkies mixes are quite popular.. "Morkies". The "designer" puppy fad, or call it what you may... is ever-growing. As far as ive seen is that some of the mixes are being recognized as actual breeds????? Its strange watching these things develop. Not to say that the original poster about how much she should charge is a breeder, becuase clearly, thats not so. But I see them being sold for much more then what you would think they should be. As said above...YORKIETALK is probably not the best place to ask.. I, myself think i must have a VERY REASONABLE VET in regards to prices for dews. They charge a larger amount for the first pup.. but just a smaller additional for each pup there after. I paid about $100 for all four to have dews and tails docked. Prices may differ... but whatever the case.. DEFINATELY ( regardless of what you are charging of pups) do the right thing and make sure to have all the necessary vet visits. Just keep the pups(and mothers) safety and well-being in mind at all times. I would agree that maybe $300 a pup would be acceptable. Sorry i jumped around alot. I, for some reason, have alot of thoughts on this. I could continue to go on and on.. but wont. goodluck |

And no there is no such thing as hybrid vigour in mixes. They can carry or exhibit any of the genetic or congenital birth defects any purebred carries that has produced them. |
One thing that is probably not considered when purchasing a "designer dog" is what kind of health problems are you getting your self into. That is definately something that I have in the back of my mind since my baby is fighting for her life, as we speak. |
