Milk, weaning, mom question? My chi mom (this is my 1st litter of pups ever) seems to not want to feed her pups any more. They are 5 weeks old on Sunday. I keep them in a playpen so when I put her in there she can't get out, but she's not happy all the time about it. She's still full of milk. Is this normal? The babies have teeth now too. When does mom stop feeding them? I make her stay in the playpen while I'm at work so I know they are still getting milk. Plus they aren't eating puppy food yet. How does mom's milk go down? Her poor boobies!!! |
Once they stop sucking the milk it will dry up, mommy probably does not want to feed anymore because of the teeth are hurting her. I would start trying to wean them and get a good quality food to put them on. |
You should already be feeding them dry puppy food moistened with water or esbilac (at 5 weeks I think water is just fine) and adding a small amount of canned (if it makes you feel better). Make it a creamy soupy texture that they can lap up until they get the hang of it and then over the next fews weeks or so gradually lessen the amount of water. I usually put the dry puppy food in a food processor and turn it into a powder for easy mixing, but I also start at just under 4 weeks. As soon as they start eating on their own, Mom will start eating less and her milk will slowly dry up. I also leave out a bowl of dry puppy food and this tells me when they are able to eat the stuff right from the bag. |

great advice!!! |
Here's a good site - I started you on the link from Birth to 3 weeks, but if you read it and scroll all the way down, it has links for 4 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, etc. I don't know if this particular site tells you about buying an infant onesie for your Mommy after the pups are eating well so she can still socialize with the pups, but they aren't able to nurse continuously. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/whelpingphotos3.htm |

Awesome! Thank you! MIne just don't seem as advanced as they should be. Mine don't eat yet, they may pick up a piece here or there but not like the website said they should be doing. |
