Taping ears Do you tape your puppies ears? If so, when is the right time to do that and what is the right way of doing it? How often do you change the tapes? My puppies will be 4 weeks this Sunday and ears are down. Thanks!!:) |
I'm interested in seeing what others say. My girls' ears were not taped by the breeder, and when I attempted taping them, they scratched them so much that it made them bleed, and then later, they would chew the tape off each other's ears. So, neither of my baby's ears are erect. Both of their parents' ears were, though. I didn't stress over it, though, because I never plan on showing my girls. |
I started taping Scampers ears at 3 months old. Today both of his ears are up and have not gone down since. I would not worry about it till they are 12 weeks, they will probably come up ln their own. You can massage them to encourage it. The person who showed me how to tape them shaved them and folded them forward and used black electrical tape around them. I would think wrapping them in gauze first would cause them to come off the first time they shook their head. They look like short little straws when done. Do not leave the tape on for more than 3 days. Take it off, and give them a couple days in between if they are not up after the first taping, which they most likely will be. Usually just the shaving alone will bring them up. |
We use masking tape on our puppies. It isn't to hard on their ears and if they pull at it (as puppies do) it will come off and not injure them. So far in each of the litters we've had all the puppies ears were erect by 12 weeks of age. |
i started taping /shaving my truffle ears when i got him it's been 6 weeks they are standing now finally! just fold them in half toward you and put a piece of masking tape over the fold i changed it daily but you could leave it for a few days and shave the hair off the back of the top tip of the ears |

I use one of the little shavers for beards. I shave the tip of the ear inside and out. This lets them stand on their own usually. I have trouble when their is more than one puppy with them chewing each others tape off. Use only masking tape as it won't get them sick. I shouldn't say it...but it drives me crazy to see full grown yorkies with down ears. Maybe I should say more crazy. lol Hope it helps. |

Hello!! This is my first yorkie and I did not know I had to shave his ears when we first got him. He is going to be 4 months pretty soon and his ears are not up. He stands them up for a moment & then he takes them back down. Today, I tapped his ears with masking tape, but his mood has changed! He just sleeps and seems down ever since. Is that normal?? Should I just remove the tape and leave the ears alone? As soon as I found out I started shaving them, but He only stands them up when he wants and only for a brief moment. I touch his ears and they have a hard line at the very half that bends the ears down. When I massage the ears, it goes away, but i think it weights down on him, right? :animal-pa |
