Docked tails? I hear that a lot of countries are now frowning upon the docking of tails. AKC still insist in the mid-tail as standard. What are your position as breeders? |
As long as the the standard for the breed states 'docked tails,' I will continue to do so. (And just FYI, don't be surprised if this thread doesn't end up as a debate of morals, ethics and cruelty--they normally do. ) |
I personally don't mind undocked or natural tails But I have to agree with BamaFan, as long as the standard is to for yorkies with docked tails, I will continue to have yorkies with docked tails. I have seen many breeders have dogs and puppies with undocked tails, and they have a harder time selling them because people think for some reason that they should be cheaper if their tails are not docked and others simply want a yorkie with a docked tail. So to sell a litter of puppies without docked tails would be alot harder than puppies with docked tails. It is sad, I wish people are like this, but they will be like this until the breed standard changes, which at this point is not likely.:( |

Have any countries banned tail docking? Yes, there are countries, which have banned cosmetic tail docking for a considerable number of years; Norway since 1987 and Sweden and Switzerland since 1988. Since 1991, Cyprus, Greece and Luxembourg have also introduced a ban. Tail docking has been banned in Finland since 1996 and Germany since May 1998. Political pressure was exerted in Germany to have hunting breeds exempted, however exempted puppies must be the offspring of parents that were specifically used as hunting dogs, not just hunting breeds. In spite of many claims to the contrary, there is no proof that an increase in tail injuries or serious health problems occurred as a result of the ban on tail docking in these countries. In England, since July 1993, only registered veterinarians can perform tail docking. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has declared that the docking of tails, other than for therapeutic or prophylactic reasons, was unethical. The RCVS stated in 1996, that such docking is capable of amounting to conduct disgraceful in a professional respect, and described such docking as unacceptable mutilation. In Australia, one State, the Australian Capitol Territory has banned tail docking. It is hoped that other States will follow this example. http://www.wsava.org/Taildock.htm It is the YTCA that sets the standards for the Yorkshire Terrier and it is the recognized club of AKC. This means YTCA says No to tail docking and not AKC. |
I would adore it if the standards where to change and long tails could be shown. I love the long tails! Although we will aso continue to have the tails docked until the rules have changed and they are also allowed. |
I have one with an undocked tail and I love her dearly, but it does create an optical illusion making her appear longer in body. To me, a docked tail looks like a Yorkie should look, but I wish they were born with short tails because I really hate to dock. Like everyone else has said the majority of people in the U.S. expect and want a docked tail. Some will even have it amputated at an older age and it is much worse then. I have 11 day old puppies so we just went through this. Mom and I were in the car with the radio on outside of the vet's office. It took him 9 minutes to dock and do the dew claws for all of them. The mother never worried over the tails, no bleeding, no pain that I could see. |
