Modified silk coat Recently , I heard 2 peoples talking about modified silk coat . What is a modified silk coat ? There is a lot to learn about Yorkshire Terriers . |
a modified coat also known as a wooly coat...usually has little to no shine with either a cottony and or curly appearance. It's usually on the thick side and very difficult to maintain. Here is a good link explaining coat and texture http://dandugmore.netfirms.com/color.html hope this helps |
coat I have bit of a different opinion when it comes to modified silk. Where I come from, it is not wool, but not pure silk...it is a bit cottony, but not pure cotton..I think that makes it clear as mud to you, I am sure LO Wool...and I rarely see any Yorkies around with a true wool coat any longer...it is black as a rule, mats and can not be brushed free of mats..needs to be kept clipped very short. Even the face mats...miserable coat for the pet owner..never should be in the ring or bred from IMO. Warm to the touch. Much like poodle texture, not always a curl to it, but it happens. I have seen a coat that is a bit softer and not true silk, a good shine and will not mat too badly if cared for with conditoner..still a bit warm to the touch, not like wool. I consider that type a modified silk. Silk is cool to the touch, almost no matting..in fact it only gets tangles from playing..lots of shine.. Many breeders disagree and say it is either silk or not, no modified..and I do tend to agree. |
Thank you Yorkierose for clarifying thing . You helped me to understand a little more about this wonderful breed . |
Yorkierose , thank you very much for informing us so well . |

But I disagree there are far to many wool, cotton, harsh coat and soft coats that continue being breed, out of 8 yorkies in a meet up on sunday there were 3 incorrect textured coats (one wool, one soft and one harsh). Many breeders I know will identify any fault as a modified as a general description. |
coats I totally agree..but have you found breeders will disagree with you on what is correct...what you and I may think is soft, some will swear it is silk??? I never see wool or coarse, butI do see soft in the ring etc. Coat texture and color is one of the easier faults to correct. I got rid of any cotton a long time ago...those coats are too hard to groom and the pet owner gives up. |
