hypocalcemia-low calcium Does anyone have any experiences with this. My little girl had her first litter on 6/3, 3 pups, mom is 5 pounds. Great pregnancy and delivery. Had her on lots of good food per vet recommendations and the breeder I bought her from. Two weeks into nursing she became hypocalcemic. No seizures, but vet said it was close. he put her on calcium pills and said let her continue to nurse. I did and pups were fully weaned 3 weeks ago, but she became hypocalcemic again 5 days ago. She almost died. It was terrifying. She finally started to improve Sat. Vet said it is highly unusual for her to become hypocalcemic following weaning-but he has seen it before. All other blood work is good and no permanent damage was noted by vet. I think I will get her spayed though. Has anyone had this experience? I would greatly appreciate any feedback. |
question It is more commonly called Eclampsia with breeders. Yes, I have had it happen twice. Both bitches were rebred and it never occurred again..but you must take precautions. There is much debate about calcuim suppliments before whelping..most vets are opposed, feeling it can cause the problem...what you need to do is speak to a reproduction vet about the proper ratio of calcuim to phorphous..that is the tricky part when supplimenting. The bitch must eat a calcuim rich well balanced diet before and after. You will want to suppliment the nursing and give mom a break for a few feedings... The bitch needs to be kept on puppy food from the first week of breeding..add cottage cheese, liver, chicken, eggs, yogart, American cheese to her daily diet..much of this can be mixed well with dry so she can not pick out the "good" stuff... As a rule you see it in a larger litter...it happened when my girl Peach had 6 and she was 5 pounds..and Pinkie was 4 pounds with 4 pups..both were not eating as well as I liked, but with future litters I feed the pups twice daily and once during the night until weaning..best wishes |
2 Weeks prior to deliver, I start the Mom on 1/4 can of Science Diet puppy food daily. 1 week prior, I start her on 1/3 C. of Esbilac daily. Right after delivery, I hit her hard with food and give her 1/2 C. of the Esbilac 2 X a day for the first week. Then I'll slowly back that off. |
I was just searching through threads and came across this one. And we are having very similar experiences. Roxi went down with eclampsia when her pups were 3 weeks old. We half way weaned the pups, and supplimented them the rest of the time. She then had an other spell about 4 days later, so we completely weaned pups. Now pups are almost 7 weeks old and we really keep an eye on her bc every once in a while she will start to get really shakey and acting like she is coming down with it again. So we just give her some extra calcium and within a couple of minutes she seems to be doing better. We were also wondering about breeding her back. |
