Yorkie "faults" Question Hi all You dont have to be a breeder to put your two cents in for this question. I am in the process of trying to improve my yorkie lines. First comes health & intellect, that is my main concern. After that comes cosmetic type concerns. I just want some opinions. What would you change about your yorkie if You could, or what is the worst traits to pass on in your own opinion? Some examples. Ears to big? Ears dont stand? Body to long? Roach back? Overbite? A bad coat......such as wooly? Too short a nose? Too long a nose? Larger big boned yorkie who is 2 or so pounds over standard? Id love to hear from any experienced breeders too on which trait to not pass on first and for most, in their opinion. |
Ugh!..... I must have asked a taboo question! |
:aimeeyork Is not a Taboo question. Personally Im still thinking how to answer cause I dont have a clue. I guess roach back and overbite. Good luck. |
i dont think it is a taboo question....... i just think that the standards are pretty clear and that MOST people "breed to as close to standard as possible" so i think those are the guidelines you should go by........ im not of the norm by any means, i love my baby (oversized) with his floppy big ears, and different textured coat (I dont know exactly what kind, it is deffinatly not silky...... maybe cottony? but i only have to brush him like once every five months)........ so i am probably the wrong person to respond because i like all these "faults" they come with (ermmm........... except the roach back, that doesnt sound too cute)... |
What I would change about my yorkie is body length. She is small, but has a long body. Otherwise, to me, she is perfect. I love her coloring, the gold around her face is 'gold' and beautiful. She is friendly and loves all people. You asked about too short a nose. Is there such thing? I have definately seen tooooo long a nose, but never too short. |
I prefer the shorter noses over the longer ones. The only thing I would maybe change on one of my dogs is Chachi's ears seem to be longer than they should be. |
I like all your responses. It certainly isnt a test.........Im just looking for my own guidelines, with some personal opinions. Sure there is a standard and I would love to get within the guidelines but I welcome all your thoughts. |
What is a roach back.. sounds awful.. |
lmao......... i though the same thing........ i think it is when they walk sort of hunched over |
changes What would I change..I wouldn't change anything about Charlotte and I like her pups...BUT it is so hard to get this same puppy over and over. I never got a super male from first champion..got several good bitches..I think it is so hard to produce quality each and every time. When you have a stud that produces terrific pups, it is no fun to see them retire like my Shorty did last year. I hate bad top lines (backs) won't breed from one. I would like to see a deeper color that lasts a life time..so hard to get..and it must be pure silk. |
YorkieRose, I don't know how to send you a picture through yorkietalk but if I could send you a picture of my female and you can tell me what you think of her. My vet has suggested showing but he doesn't show yorkies. If you could PM me you e-mail addy i will send you a pic and you can school me.......PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE |
email I will give an opinion as best I can by a photo...and perhaps I can suggest a couple people to take her to in person. Primyork@aol.com |
photo Take pictures of her standing and stacked on a table..like you would see in the ring...a face on head shot doesn't tell much. |
I sent 4 and only one was of her face, just for coloring and ears purposes. The other 2 are of her in the "stacked position" but not on a table. Hopefully you can tell a little by those pictures. Maybe enough to place her in the maybe show and I can go further with this endeavor but if she isn't then I need not put my all and lots of hard work into a long coat with wrapping it and combing 2 times a day. I just don't want to waste time in ring training if she isn't show material. If she isn't--no biggie--she's still queen around here. |
Please post how it goes.......this is interesting! Ugh!!!! Coat wrapping........i bet that is a job and a half. I bet showing a puppy is alot easier then an adult for sure. BTW like all the threads, Breeders and owners alike. |
