C-Section My yorkie had puppies last Tues. everyone is well however she needed a C-section. She is a great mother. This was her first litter and she got scared when it came time to push. Should I not breed her again? |
I would not breed her again if she had to have a C-section with the first litter. There are so many complications that can arise under normal delivery circumstances, let alone dealing with a surgical procedure that can endanger the mom and pups. It probably just wouldn't be worth it to take the chance again. Too many variables can happen. Best of luck to you. |
I think we sometimes put human emotions on our babies!! She might have been afraid, but more likely in some pain. I don't have any experience with C-sections so I can't answer you question, I'm sure someone here can though. |
What size is she and how much did she weigh before hand? IMO any dog that has needed a c-section in the past because they could not give birth naturally should not be bred again. Odds are that they will need another c-section. To put a dog through multiple c-sections IMO would be immoral. We have to put their best intrests first and we honestly never know if we're giving them enough or too much pain meds since they're not able to talk to communicate to us very well. Good vets usually would recommend getting her spade. C-sections are major surgery. I am glad that your girl is doing well. I'm also glad that you asked this question, I can tell that you love your little girl. Congratulations on the puppies. |
In the dog world, they say once a C-section always a planned C-section. I, personally, would spay her just because of the expense if nothing else. On a personal note, my first daughter was born by C-section (breach) and 22 years ago they also said once a C-section always a C-section because of the risk of the prior scar opening; however, my second daugther was born natural (3 years later). I was the first in my ob-gyn's practice to do this. I did a lot of research and opted for a natural delivery because it seemed to me that the anesthesia was a higher risk. I also had what they call a bikini incision (horizontal, rather than vertical) so the risks were lower with this type of incision. |
There are a lot of breeders that regularly do c-sections on their bitches. I am not one of them but I do know several that do. Most Pekingese are all c-sectioned and bull dogs and many others. However there is a risk to the bitch. So what you need to decide is, is it worth it to you. I raised three litters for a well known Pekingese breeder and all were c-sectioned, sure beats staying up all night , waiting for puppies. Being a breeder is a big commitment and it means loosing a lot of sleep. Some of the older breeders just do the sections because it is easier on themselves. The bitches recover quite fast and do not seem to be in much pain past a day or two. If your bitch has a lot to offer, then I say go for it , but if she is just your beloved pet, don't take the risk. Most of the time I think a bitch can have at least three and sometimes more sections, depends on what the vet says each time he is in there. Debbie Ray www.sumtoiyorkies.com |
sections 35 yrs and this is what works for me...I give a bitch two chances to free whelp. Of course, you want to look at any reason for not free whelping the first time...look at her size, number and size of pups, condition, good muscle tone etc...is she spoiled etc..I have had spioled girl afraid of pain..but once pups came they were fine. If she does well with her litter...is a good mom, I would try again..BUT that is the way I do it..I have had a number need a section the first time and go on to be the best bitches I have ever had..they produced free-whelped pups the rest of their breeding life..and others who needed a second section...when that happened my vet spayed at the second section..we figure they will need surgery to be spayed, so a second second is not alot different. A good rule of thumb is the 3 finger rule..can you fit 3 fingers in the space under the anus to the vulva...that is ideal pelvic opening size. I have seen large skulls on xrays, the vet and myself said..NO WAY the pups would come out..but they did with no trouble. Sometimes the first rule of breeding is.."there are no rules" that fit every dog and bitch in every situation. Dogs can not read books and many do the opposite of what the book says...or what the breeder has found to be true in the past... |

Well this was my first, our first time having puppies and i think it was my fault she needed the c-section. when she went to push i saw the puppy sac start to come out and i gasped for air. i was about 2 feet away from her (sitting on the floor in front of her) and i scared her. she stoped pushing, and i no longer saw the sac so i figured maybe i didnt see what i thought i saw. i called the vet anyway and told him what i had done. he told me to leave her alone. so i did for about 5 minutes then i went to check on her. she stoped panting and was just laying down trying to sleep. i went to rub her belly like i always did and i noticed something kind of egg-shaped at her pee hole and part of a sac stretching the area. then i ran back to the phone and called the vet. he told me to come in. he gave her a shot to start the labor again. anyway to make a long story short she had the puppy with out the c-section but he didnt make it. i was told she could have the other puppies without the c-section but they have a better chance of living if she had the c-section. my female and male yorkies are both about 5.5lbs. please dont bash me for how i dealt with the situation i feel alot of guilt......(I especially feel awful about the puppy that didnt make it) |
p.s. Gizzameazo is a great mom it is so cute when i ask if she wants to go outside and she runs to the door then to the puppies then to the door about 5 times of course the call of nature always wins. Whenever one of her two puppies roll of the blanket onto the floor. they cry, she will come find me so i can put them back. it looks like she is scare to pick them up with her mouth. i have seen her try. :animal36 |
<----- this is my baby with her 2 babies :D |
section I can help mom whelp a litter with my eyes closed and one hand behind my back..BUT do you know how I started out? I sat outside the bathroom door while my husband did it...so do not apologize. Long about the 3rd litter I decided I needed to get my act together...it is not unusal for the first pup, of the first litter to take a bit of time..and a few are born dead..then the others are usually okay and pass just fine. You had a bit of a panic and next time you will be better...your vet know doubt wanted a good result for you..I do think it would have been best to wait and see in the office if she could have finished whelping herself..but it could have been a busy day or near closing time..or like I said..the vet wanted the best chance for the rest of the litter to be alive. If you decide to try again..why not spend some time talking with the breeders on Yorkie forums and learn to relax..perhaps, there are some near you to help you through a whelping until you get your sea legs....good luck with you litter... |
it was the end of the day when she started having her puppies. the vet closed at 5:50 we got there at 4:30. yesterday the puppie were 10 days old and i had to take the mom to the vet because she was still bleeding and it seemed like the bleeding just kept getting worse the vet gave her that shot to clean her uterus. shouldnt she have gotten it after the c-section? |
I'm not a breeder so I can't answer any questions regarding the c sections. I just wanted to congratulate you for the new babies. I hope that mom and pups are doing well. Nice pic. |

Have you been monitoring her temperature? You say the discharge was increasing? Was it smelly, green or black? Maybe your vet didn't administer a shot to clean her uterus out like ocytocin to begin contractions and it was an antibiotic in case she was developing a uterine infection. Did she pass anything after the injection? If so, I would insist she be put on antibiotics. |
the discharge was red. i took her to the vet yesterday because she was also throwing up. the vet said he was going to give her the shot to clean out her uterus (10 days after having the pups). her temp was 103 and he gave me antibiotics as well. he did blood work on her and also told me she needed more protien so i have been feeding her plain boiled chicken. she is doing so much better today. the puppies are good too. they are getting fat! |
