Weaning Problems.... The pups are now 3 1/2 weeks, and I think Mom is done with feeding them. Even if we lie her down for the pups to nurse, she is beginning to growl and snap at them (which is what I read happen in Gidget...'s post). I have started the Caesar Can Food like suggested here, and the pups seem to like it, but if i leave it out for them to eat all the time, the Mom comes in and eats it all. Should they be eating just the canned food at this time? Should I be giving the Evaporated Milk recipe along with the canned food? How long should they be given the milk along with the pup food? And how often should I be feeding them the canned food? Sorry for all the ?? but I want to make sure they are getting enough. Thanks, Audrey |
I would check the Mom's temp and teats for mastitis. Clip the puppies' nails. My girl, Allie will nurse her pups at least once or twice a day up to like 10 weeks (probably more, if I would let her). Be careful about leaving wet food out. Everything I have read says bacteria forms in as little as 30 minutes on wet food, just feed 4 times a day and throw out what is left after 30 minutes. At 3 1/2 weeks I would keep adding the "milk replacer" at least for another week. longer if you think they are underweight. I also would try to get them on a quality chicken based dry puppy food and just add a little of the can to the softened dry so you can eventually get them on dry only. |

You have been such a GREAT help, and I wish there was some way I could repay you for all your help! Just know you are VERY appreciated!!! Audrey |
Audrey, Your adding liquid to the food already, so this should be enough. I would also be giving a small amount of Nutristat 2 or 3 times a day, especially if they are no longer nursing. I wouldn't worry too much about the water, adding Karo is just an invitation to bacteria. I would just stick with the nutristat. Are they still nursing at all, if so, that is also providing liquids. If they are no longer nursing, just make sure the food you are feeding is very soupy by adding water or milk replacer. If they seem to be constipated or have hard stools and you are doing all of the above, you might want to give them chicken broth (the low sodium natural kind) to encourage drinking. Crystal |
I just made a gruel with puppy food and milk replacer, soupy enough that they could lap it up. Mine were not too interested in water either until I added a little Karo to it, then they loved it.:) |
Thanks guys! Yes, they are still nursing, just no where near how they were. Mom still goes in there with them, and today we saw her nurse them for about 10 min. and then she jumped out eventhough they were still nursing. We are giving them Nutrical twice a day. I will watch their stools, so far they have been moist and firm, which looked normal to me. Thanks again for the ideas and help! Audrey |
