Well i'm not a breeder and i just got my pup 3 weeks ago so? But first and most important WELCOME TO YT!!!:welcome4: I am very sorry that this thread has gone this way infact i'm kinda EMBARRESSED that you would be greeted this way:2omg: i understand that this is a touchy subject and how strongly we all feel about our babies but c'mon guys we shoud be helping her that is what this site is here for ! yes you need a lot of time care and patients to breed and if you search though the old forums you will find a ton of answers to any of your questions. There are sometimes and some subjects that are really touchy like someone said we have heard a lot of heartache from people who have been sold sick puppies(not saying that you would) not everyone is so opinionated and there are a lot of very friendly people on this site. They are your dogs and you will do what you need to with them we are just here for suggestions and advice i really hope you reconsider staying i have looked at a lot of diff sites and none of them even compare to the knowlege this site has. Again i am so sorry you were treated this way. :( :D |
Just thought I'd put in my two cents. I recently purchased my 2nd yorkie and I did go through a breeder that shows as well. I have had the opportunity to talk to breeders who I found on the breeder referral page of the Yorkshire Terrier club of America. They all were very good people who jumped at the chance to talk about their love of yorkies. They gave me so much information and so many leads. I finally found my puppy. I learned a lot from them, but more importantly I learned that they did not make a profit. In fact they lost money. They just keep doing it to improve the breed and because they love yorkies. You will come to find what a truly special breed they are now that you have your own. Good Luck!! |

Second, the member who wanted to know Nancy's last name should have done it the proper way if she had any concern and that would have been to pm me. Don't you think? That is private info that I would not just post openly. Excuse me for getting defensive about that but It seems like since I found this place I've had to put my guard up in every direction. I've had my financial and personal character attacked so I assumed by her asking the last name she was accusing me of lying. I'm terribley sorry if it wasn't meant that way but she really should have pmd me if she had a concern like that. I also like the way you tell me that I shouldn't "skip to conclusions so fast." Isn't that what everyone has been doing with me? And the conversation was going my way with the very few who actually answered my original question. Eveyone else has totally switched things up to make me out to be some money grubbing puppy hater. There is one question that was never anwered and that was the one that I asked about what people do with the money they make off of their puppys. Do you burn it? It's funny how I've been able to answer questions thrown at me yet not one person can answer that one simple question. I've been bashed for wanting to make a small profit (much later. they are still babies themselves!) but I would really like to know what these "breeders" do with their money they make. Surely they don't buy anything for themselves do they. (sarcasm intended) |

Reputable breeders do it for the love of the breed. They've already lost so much money in the process of breeding (which is why they have a hefty pricetag) that whatever they make from the actual sale just makes them either even out or maybe a tiny bit of loss. That is of course assuming we are talking about a reputable breeder, not a back yard breeder that uses their dogs as cash cows. There are vet bills, supplies and medicine to be bought and I'm sure credit cards are a breeders best friend to cover that stuff until the puppies are sold to only pay that off to start again later in the year. From what I've heard it's a lot of time and dedication and loads of money. So the answer to your question, I think they use the money they make off of their puppies to replenish their accounts or credit card debts. By the way, no one MADE anyone out to be a puppy hater but I'm sure you can see how the following sentence can send the wrong message: "Now in order to get the building I need to know how the price of each puppy so I can figure how many litters she'll have to have...I only need enough puppies to get my building and I figure since they are AKC registered they should bring in some money." |

Can we be for real here people. I have two small (babies) yorkies. I know that a dog is not supposed to "get pregnant" in it's first heat. She has never been in heat yet. My little Trooper is so small that he is not even weaned from his chi surrogate mommy yet. You guys act like I have a houseful of yorkies and I'm packing them up as they are being born. I do know that they only have a couple of babies, very small litters. I do not plan on getting rich. You can call me a "backyard breeder" and say that I will use the little guys as "cash cows" but are you for real? If I only have two dogs and give them lots of love and attention and make sure their medical needs are met and they have a litter of puppies and I find what I think to be good homes...that makes me bad? What makes a good breeder? Having lots of dogs or ribbons to hang or many "online friends" that say your a good breeder? If I shower them with things they need and place a few puppies into loving homes and that makes me a "bad breeder" then I guess that is what I'll be. And if I'm putting a little cash (even if only a little) in the bank and it came from the sale of a puppy then call me what you will. It may not be enough to get my building built but I have a feeling even if I wanted the money for a paperclip you guys would have a problem with that. |
As long as you take care of them like you say you will and want to make a little extra money, then I say go for it but just know all the extra care you will have to give the mama dog during and after pregnancy. And the care for the puppies, which is quiet a bit. Which you most likely know because you said you have other animals and have a vet two farms away. I know I too will probably get attacked for saying that, but thats okay. I say a well bred, HEALTHY yorkie puppy will sell for about $1,300. What state are you located in? I'm in California and thats the going rate here. |
