SHOCKED by # of pups!! I found out the my Angel Baby's momma recently (in May) had a litter of 9 (yes, NINE!!!) puppies!! Two of them died by day 2, but HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!! NINE PUPPIES for a YORKIE?!?!?!?! I've heard that the litter size is often passed from mother to daughter. I don't know what I would do if Angel had NINE puppies. Angel was one of 7 in her litter, if I remember correctly. With that large of a litter, is it safe to say that you will have at least one die, due to mom not having enough milk to go around. Or could 9 pups survive if all were born without defects or problems? |
WOW. That's unreal ! and sad about the poor 2 that didn't make it.... |
I've never heard of a yorkie having a litter that size. Is she a bigger yorkie? |
My breeder just had a litter of seven, but two of hers died as well. |

Actually, yes. She weighs about 9.5 pounds, I think. Angel is a little bigger, too. She's probably 8.5, full grown. |
copulation x number of puppies I read how many times the dogs copulate increases the size of the litter. For example 3 times would give a large litter. Is this true? |
Is X copulation a factor? Quote:

Venus was bred only one time and had 7 puppies . |
i had just read that the female can produce up to 200 eggs during a 3-5 day cycle. each one of these days, an egg can be fertilized. and also, in the same article i finally found out what the runt of the litter is..... if a female was bred on the last day, it can take 3 days for the egg to be fertilized so an egg that was fertilized on the first day, this pup could be up to a week older than the last. so the last fertilized egg is the runt since it didnt have as much time to develope than the first. wow what we learn. i hope i explained this so that you can understand it. my spell check is not working so forgive me for any misspelled words. |
My yorkie just had 8 puppies three weeks ago. I was shocked that the last one was born 48 hours later (and furious at the vet!!). The last puppy died and three days later another one died. But we are happy that we have 6 healthy puppies. Can you imagine my shock! Afterall, this was Nina's first litter! |
WOW there have been some large litters!! My Emilee had 5 (one passed the next day) and I thought that was alot. I think if I had my choice, I would prefer 3-4. |
WOWSERS! That sure is a lot of babies! |
