Another trick with a female who has had eclampsia, and is nursing pups, is to cut of the end of a pantyhose, put it around her so the pups can't nurse. Take it off every two hours to let the pups nurse, that way you won't have 4-6 puppies nursing all day long, you have all puppies nursing at once and it helps the mother to build up her calcuim levels between the two hours. I had a Dachshund that had eclampsia, I feed my mothers, dry puppy food with cooked liver, cottage cheese, slices of cheese and a small bowl of goats milk.

Good info here. I know that my Gracie's mom died when her pups were 2 days old. They had to nurse them after that. They were first time breeders and didn't know the risks involved and the importance of calcium.

hi, i dont think they are prone to this from now on or need to be spayed but it does tend to happen with females over and over if not careful. there's no need to spay because of eclampsia, in my opionion or my vet's opionion, (she's reproductive specialist and i put my faith in her) i feel that it depends on the individual litter and mommy. is the litter a big litter, is the litter draining her dry of her calcium, ect. my vet suggests giving a "tums" once a day if eclampsia is an issue. goat's milk is also great, but be sure to dilute it one can to one can water...... don't give cheeses or dairy because dogs systems just cant deal with natural dairy products like we can.... i just dont feel spaying is an option unless it is a huge concern and happens atleast 3 litters in a row. some yorkie mommys dont produce the calcium for them and their pup's needs so we have to step in. just a thought, and is my opionion from own experiences. feel free to private message me and i'll tell you about my experiecnes with this. i've had 2 girls in past who had this prob and one hasnt had it in 3 yrs. hope i've been of help. best wishes!
