No it is not genetic. Yorkies and other small breeds are just more susceptible because of their small size. They are so tiny so they don't eat that much and it takes a lot of energy to keep their little bodies warm. To prevent hypoglocemia, you need to make sure that your puppy is eating regularly and that it stays warm. Make sure it gets enough rest. I would also supplement its diet with NutriCal 4-5 times daily just as a precautionary measure. |
I don't think anyone could say for certain because I have seen breeders that never have it in their pups and then I see some that their pups have it frequently. The smaller the puppy the more they are at risk so I think it is just a problem related to size. Since most, if not all, outgrow it I don't see how it could be genetic. |
I don't know if it genetic in dogs, but both my dad and brother are hypoglycemic. Don't know if thta helps or not. |
Nope, it is caused by a drop in blood sugar. The smaller the puppy the more supseptible they are. It can be from not eating enough, skipping a meal, burning too many calories, to throwing up and losing those calories. My yokires are now 3 and 4 years, have had a bout in almost a year but all it can take is diarrhea or skipping a meal and we have trouble. They basically do not have the resrve that a larger dog would have. |
