How do you cut the umbilical cord... Just in case the Mommy is too tired to do her job. I know I can get the crimping scisors, but I remember reading on here about another way to do it. Any ideas? |
I like using the hemostats about one-half inch from the body and then cutting or shredding with dull scissors or fingernails on the side away from the body. You can also tie the cord off with dental floss, but it is much more difficult than using the hemostats. How many of you return the cord blood back to the baby? |
I'm not sure if it's the same for doggies, but I'll tell you how to do a human: Clamp both ends leaving space in between and cut when the cord stops pulsating. :p |
I have only used the hemostat, but I know many here use the dental floss. I left around an inch and a half, but Bell ecided that wasn't short enough and ended chewing it off closer. |
I don't ever let mommy do the cord, I did one time, and she made a huge mess of it, and the puppy almost bled to death before I got the bleeding to stop, lovely hernia on that puppy. ARGH.. since that "epsiode", I always do the cords myself.. hemostat about an inch from the belly, push back the blood into the puppy, then cut on MY side of the hemostat, not the puppies belly side. No need to tie, etc. the hemostat crimped it shut, and no bleeding. Then the tough part is just encouraging mom she really doesn't NEED to make it shorter, lol |
Who else here has had a pup come out, but the placenta still inside TIGHTLY, and had to clamp/cut the cord with NO working room? Now that is SCARY! |
