PLEASE HELP! 3 Day old Baby having problems
 

My Yorkie Mom (Bambi) gave birth to one puppy monday night. She is having problems knowing what to do. From the time she gave birth it has been a struggle. She chose her own spot when she welped. On a quilt next to the couch. She had no signs of labor other than panting which she did anyways every time I come in the house. Bambi has a hard time when I am away and it has been worse scence she has been pregnant. I was home only 30 min. at the most when I figured out she had her baby.She came by me and I checked her but like always to see if anything was happening and suprize she was all ready done. When I found the baby he was cold, lathargic, and was having a really hard time breathing. I suctioned him wiped and rubed him just enough to get him going because I wanted to give him back to Bambi asap. She laid down in her welping box with my husband and I encouraging her. She licked him a little mainly on his face. He moved around alittle and even though he was by Bambi with all her hair he was not warming up. So I got out the heating pad and put it under Bambi's bedding (only covering half the welping box) In a little pit he started to warm up and move around. His breaathing was still not very good so I tried to get anything else out, which helped. We asisted Bambi in feeding him- he was having problems laching on. I did so every 1 1/2 hours or so that night. Tuesday morning I thought they were getting the hang of it untill she started to move the baby. So if I was not with her by her welping box she would leave and follow me. No matter wher I go she would jump up and came with me. She did this before she was preg. too but I never thought she would leave her baby so much and so upruptly. Then I realized she was not licking him that much. And hardly at all on his butt. So I started to stimulate him to go, which kind of worked. After she tried to move him again and I had to pry her mouth open to get him out. It seemed that she was trying to bring him to me? Anyways I called the vet to move my appt sooner. Bambi and baby checked out ok but babys tummy is very tight. Vet said to watch that and continue what I was doing and to monitor Bambi with the baby. So I have, but he has hardly gone poop. Just a little bit. He seems more uncomfortable and his tummy is bigger and Bambi still is not licking there to help him go. I have tried- dry, wet & warm paper towel. I do not know what to do. Do you thing the baby is constipated? How can you tell? If yes what should I do? And Bambi is trying to more baby even more- she tried to bring him on the couch by me just an hour ago. The baby also started to spit up? or like fome out his nose and mouth and I can here conjestion when he breaths. Any sagestions please! I do not know what to do anymore. I really don't know if this will help, but since she is wanting to leave the baby and follow you, maybe if you put her in an x-pen where she can't leave the baby. I used an x-pen with a crate inside it for the Emilee and babies. Then when Emilee needed to go potty, she could leave the crate and go on the pee pads in the x-pen. Also, sometimes it takes a little while for the puppies to go. I used a cotton ball with more warm and cool water. I squeezed most of the water out, but not all. I gently rubbed and thought nothing was gonna happen, but I kept at it and they finally pottied. Sometimes it just takes a little while. If things don't get better, I would go back to the Vet. The congestion is a little worrisome.

Thank you yorkie3 for your reply. Things have gotten worse. Bambi keeps biting at her baby. At first I thought she was just trying to move him but it was too rough. At least she kind of listened to me when I told her no. The last time she only nursed him 3-4 min once I got her to lay down. Then she started again and did not listen to me. The baby kept trying to go by her and she kept moving and she kept moving him. He was crying and wandering around wanting to be by her. She just looked at him like how dare you come by me. I know sounds silly. The last straw was when she was holding him by his foot, I had to pry her mouth open to get him loose. Then I had to take her away from him before she really hurt him. So I trieg again with her about 30 min ago. It was quieter, I was calmer and I didn't touch him at all before she did. She was worse than ever wouldn't let him nurse at all, and kept biting at him. The baby was so upset I had to take him away. Which is the last thing I would ever want to do. I don't know if I should keep trying with her or start bottle feeding or both. I just do not know what is best. I have had other litters with different moms and never had this problem. Thank you for any responses.

At this point I don't think she plans on being a mother to this pup at all. I would take it away and bottle feed it yourself. Seems to me the pup doesn't have any chance of surviving if you leave it with Mom.

I think that just like people, some dogs just aren't cut out to be mothers... Is this her first litter? How old is she?

Hopefully some of the breeders will chime in and give you their advice....

Sounds like she doesn't want to share you at all. I would start some bottle feeding but also continue to try putting him to her. My Nyah had only one puppy on May 3 by c-section. He was premature and we had him in a little incubater on oxygen. In the mean time, we milked the mom. Not an easy job at all. We fed him mom's milk along with Esbilac when we didn't get enough milk from mom. He couldn't latch on so we were using a syringe and then had to go to tube feeding because he was losing weight and the vet said to start that. He gained on the tube feedings. I started teaching him to lap now and eat and now I have the same problem that you do with the tummy being tight. My vet gave him an enema and showed us how to do it. To me it seems like constipation. He still has a tight tummy but wants to eat. We also do alot of stimulation.

As far as the congestion, I agree with Yorkie3. That is worrisome. I would call the vet and have him checked.

I hoped this helped some. You may have to start feeding him on your own. Sometimes some dogs just don't get the hang of being a mom and don't make good moms :( But definately have the congestion checked out.

did you call the vet? keep this puppy warm. bottle feed. wet a cotton ball with warm water and rub it over the bottom to make it go. it will probably take a while for it to go. do you have any goats milk?
after my post, I see char7 says it much better.

I would definitely do all that was suggested, bottle feed and potty him yourself. Just be patient doing this because it's not like you rub him a couple times and he'll go. I've had to re-wet the cotton ball a couple of times. So keep trying until he goes. But please have the Vet check him for constipation first. I've known mothers that for the first week or two didn't want anything to do with their babies but after that, you couldn't keep them away from them. I probably wouldn't leave the baby alone with her without your supervision. Keep him warm and even lay down with them if it will make your girl feel more comfortable. I agree w/ KellyV, sounds like your baby doesn't want to be a mommy, for whatever reason. I could call the vet and get a professional opinion if I was in this situation, cuz I would be completly clueless. Good luck with the puppy and I hope this all turns out to be ok.

The pup needs to be on a warming pad..under the box and fed well...you can allow the mother with the pup if you are there...a healthy pup only nurses a few minutes every 2 or 3 hrs...wipe his bottom if she does not ..and keep her away if she is hurting him...he may need bottle feedong...

I am one to be honest..and breeding a pet CAN have these results..they do not want to remain in a contained pen, they move the pup around and can be come aggressive toward it, refuse to take proper care of the pup...I wish you luck..

Oh hon that sounds rough. I would suggest watching her very closely with the pup and like the other ladies suggested maybe lay there and see if she will care for him while you are there. I would suggest if her behaviour doesn't change towards him to not breed her again. Sometimes you get a female that has no instincts and definitely won't be a good mother.

Hope the little one does well.

I would supervise nursing and hold the mother if necessary. No prepared formula is going to be as good as mom's milk which has immunities.

I found this interesting information on immunities in colostrum:



"colostrum with its antibody protection is only present in the first 24 hours of milk flow and newborns can only gain colostral immunity if they nurse during that time frame, and they are less than one day old. After that, it makes no difference how much or how little they nurse, they will not receive any more antibodies.

Many breeders and pet owners believe that as long as the puppy is nursing, she is gaining more protection. Wrong. Others feel that by allowing older puppies to nurse on a new mother immediately after she gives birth will give the young animals another dose of antibodies. Wrong again. Remember, the newborns cannot absorb antibodies after their digestive tract loses the ability to absorb large unaltered protein molecules. All the protection the animal has is what she received in that first day of life. Later on, we can only augment this by vaccination."

how is your little one today ? I can't offer advise but want to wish you all the best with him - poor baby - I hope he'll be ok and if you can nurse him to a healthy weight - more power to you ! Good luck

I was wondering about the outcome of this situation also. Please post an update for us. We are concerned.

I can see by the dates it's been several days. I am supposing the baby didn't make it and that "thisandthat" is in some pain and not wanting to talk. Sounds to me like right from the first Bambi knew that there was something wrong with the baby and didn't want to be with him.

Thisandthat, if you read this and have lost your baby, I am so sorry. I have been there just recently. I nursed one for 2 weeks before she finally passed away. Don't be angry with Bambi or yourself, sometimes you just can't save them no matter what you try. Sylvia
