I have to share "Joker" Cleft lip / cleft palate baby I named him for the funny way his top lip turned up on one side. Joker was born a cleft lip / cleft palate yorkie puppy. After next day weights he hadnt gained anything and it was found he had a cleft lip and frontal cleft palate. He tried to nurse with all his might, but he couldnt. He has been handfed since day 2 and he has the will of a lion! More energy then I have, Let me tell you! I periodically give him antibiotics, since he aspirates often due to his palate. He is 4 weeks old, weighs 6 ozs, started a bit of mushy canned food, 3 days ago and he appears to be doing fine. ( I continue to give him puppy milk supplement) Joker is not out of the woods but this kid is just AWESOME! He is not a failure to thrive, he wants to thrive! Hes real little but he is strong. Any (yorkie) dog like this long ago used to be destroyed for physical attirbutes like this. Is saving him worth it? YOU BETCHA! I have attached a pic of him in my husbands shirt pocket. If I get him weaned to dry food I think he is going to make it. This is the website who has helped me, I so hope he makes it. I hope it helps someone else. http://www.henwood.com |
I'm glad he's doing so good!! Keep up the good work, and I'll keep him in my prayers that he continues to survive so well! :) |

Thank you for sharing. Joker is one special little dude. This might sound really goofy, but I believe, with all my heart, that special little ones like Joker are sent to us for a reason. I guarantee, he will touch someone in a very significant way--- you may never ever know, but he will! Please post more pics.... :) |
Ah, what a great story to start the day. I commend you for what you are doing, sounds like alot of work, but after hearing your story, well worth it, I pray Joker continues to thrive, and lives a long happy life,, thanks to you. ;) Keep us up to date on his story. |
Oh my what a tiny miracle baby...he is so lucky to have you give this little man a chance. Bless you and him! |
I am so happy that you are sticking with him and going to make him survive to be a healthy little boy. A few years ago on another forum this happened to a novice breeder and I tell you, she stuck by that little one like glue and to her patient feedings and love that little girl survived and thrived... |
God Bless his little heart and yours for giving him a chance that others may not have!!! We all deserve a chance!!! |
