Help for sore nipples, Please! Looks to me like Autumn has sore nipples. The puppies are one day short of 3 weeks. Usually it looks like she has no milk. The 4 babies seem to keep her drained but I noticed her nipples have dark pink to red rings around the base of her nipples and some of her nipples look red. What can I do for her? Sylvia |
the extra stress on the nipples will cause redness make sure the puppy nails are trimmed. If you want to give mom a break suppliment the pups for a day and bring them back in. Are you feeding her extras like cottage cheese, cheese, goats milk, along with her normal diet? she needs to be feed many small meals a day! |
I free feed. I have puppy food down for her all the time. I add canned puppy food, cottage cheese and sometimes just cheese to her diet. I was wondering if there wasn't some sort of medicine or ointment I could put on her to ease the pain. I am assuming it hurts by the looks of it. Sylvia |
put nothing on those teats while they are nursing. like I said give her a rest by supplimenting for a day, that may calm the redness down... |
Ok. What about the milk caking? There is a little of that going on now. I think it hurts and she's trying not to nurse them as often as she should. Sylvia |
I know feminvstr probably knows a lot more than I do, but they do make a product called lansinoh for breast feeding mothers that you do not need to remove prior to feeding so I don't know why it wouldn't be safe for puppies. It's basically a pure form, hypoallergenic, medical grade of lanolin. It might be that she is just drying up so they are sucking hard because they are not getting enough. If you were to give her a 24 hour break and this is what is going on most likely she would dry up. There is a product called milkade which increases milk supply. Make sure she is drinking a lot and eating several small meals a day. You can give her chicken broth in her water to increase consumption. |
Warm compresses will make Autumn more comfortable. |
Thanks for the info ladies. She seems to be doing better. I supplimented the puppies for about 24 hrs. But for next time: where can I buy the Milkade? Sylvia |
I saw it in Omaha Vaccine company's catalog. petsuppliesdelivered.com or Omahavaccine.com |
would "bag balm" hurt the babies? I know they use this on cows utters for sore nipples, we use this on dry skin and it works like a charm! I know when I put it on my skin, Kloey loves licking it off, I try to keep her from not doing it, but there is something in it she loves. |
