Advice on breeding AKC toy poodle and AKC yorkie Hi! We live in an area where you can get big dogs by the truckload, but little dogs -- like yorkies and yorkie-poos -- are very hard to find!!! We just had our first litter of 5 healthy AKC yorkies and every single one of them went to a loving home and each of the new owners said the same thing: 'we've been looking for a yorkie for months!'. We now have a waiting list of 4 families waiting for the next litter!! I bred our two yorkies because I think yorkies make great pets and I wanted to make more yorkies available in our county... Now I have the opportunity to add an AKC toy poodle to our family and I am considering whether we should breed her and make some yorkie-poos available to people who have been searching for them for months. My biggest concern is about this one poodle in particular -- she is 7 months old and weighs 4 pounds (I don't know how tall she is -- waiting for a call back from my friend). My male yorkie is 3 years old and weighs 7 pounds. I have heard that poodles are not usually compared on a weight basis, but rather height -- my concern is for the little girl poodle's health -- would it be safe to breed her with my male? My friend spoke with a breeder who said that it is safe to breed heavier yorkie males with lighter poodle females because of the conformation differences in the breeds. Obviously I don't want to breed if it will present any kind of health risk for the female to carry the pups to term and deliver them safely. Thanks for your input! |
Weight doesn't matter, Size usually does You'd have to see the overall dimensions of the poodle in question. I would not judge by weight ever. Rather, if both are in good shape and the pieces to the puzzle fit, you should be fine! Also, before breeding her please, please, be sure to have her tested for everything physical (heart/eyes/teeth/hips/knees/elbows/liver) and be sure that she herself does not posess any congenital defects that she is likely to pass onto her pups or be affected by during pregnancy! Best of luck to you and yours. While I understand your reasoning, I myself would not cross breed...still doesn't mean that I don't want you making educated decisions! Have fun w/ the new girl! Post photos when you get a chance! I'd love to see her. ;) ps. In regards to her having issues w/ whelping the pups due to her weight, don't worry, look at her size first. Also the body structure at birth for both poodles and yorkies are quite similar (give them an hour to fill out and form and there's a big difference, but not till then) and so you shouldn't have any problems on that end. It's the initial mating that you should be more concerned w/ structurally. |

My opinion.....that is it! |
i think he is waAYYYY to big for her and im not even a breeder i think you should stick to your akc yorkies why ruin it and add more mix breeds your yorkies sound great you should continue to better the breed |
Why not find a suitable AKC poodle stud? Although I love poodles and Yorkies, I don't like crossbreeding. |
More info on the female poodle: weight 6.5 lbs, height 10 inches Well, it turns out my friend hadn't weighed her poodle recently! She called back saying she weighs 6.5 lbs and is 10 inches tall. Always better to have accurate information! I would of course take her to the vet before her heat cycle and have her thoroughly checked... Thanks to everyone for their comments and opinions -- it all adds up to help me to make an informed decision! God bless you! |
So many people are against cross breeding, I have tried and tried to figure out why but it just does not make sense. If you can guarantee that both the mother and father are checked out and are healthy and have no genetic faults or diseases that can be passed on they why not?? You want the pups to be of very best quality which is why you would have to have a good standard of the yorkie as well as the poodle. The two breeds once mixed together make an excellent combination and offer many benifts. Such as hypoallergenic factor that yorkie poos are great for people who suffer from allergies. And no one can tell me that that is not true because I do suffer from allergies and I have personally experienced that I am not allergic to yorkiepoos as I am with most breeds. If you are striving for the best than why not?? I know plenty of people who would rather have a yorkiepoo then a yorkie. But everyone has their opinions and just as many will disagree as many that will agree. :) As far as the size and weight goes I am in complete agreement with yorkiek9trainer. |
