Return to a breeder, how?......Please Help!!!
 

Help..
i bought a yorkie male sat. i signed a contract for 48 hours to have avet confirm the pet is unfit for purchase i took him to the vet for a exam on tuesday when they opened, he said nothing, i took the pup back today for his vaccine and the vet tells me he has hernias on both side of the pelvis that he noticed them last time but wasnt sure so didnt say anything now my 48 hours are up....what do i do.the vet said he would call the breeder.but the other thing i am worried about is that i had just talked to her about returning him yesterday because i have been told he might be a redleg yorkie she said no i dont want her to think i just made this up...the surgery is $937.00...........Please help what do i say to the breeder? all she has left is a female and she cost more....she was pretty!!

I feel certain the breeder, if experienced, knew the hernias were there. Yikes on your vet prices in VA. You might want to call a few other vets and ask the price for a bilateral inguinal surgery including isoflurane anesthesia and pain meds. Here it would only be about $250.00 for the surgery.

Also, hernias are considered genetic (especially bilateral inguinal hernias likes his) so he should not be bred. I can't believe the vet didn't mention it on the first visit. Some hernias will close up on their own. Read up on them so you will know the dangerous symptoms because sometimes they become strangulated (loose their blood supply) and can be fatal (when not repaired).

I can't see how the breeder could think you were making up hernias - they're there or they're not. If the breeder will I would rake together some more money and exchange for the female, especially since you have other concerns.

i just stumped right now.i dont want another unhealthy pup, breeder know that i recently lost a pup...so i am hoping that i can at least get my money back if not the female....i have tried calling but i havent gotten an awnser yet i figured i would try again at 6. you would never had known something was wrong, hes playing and eating and going to the bathroom fine.

I didn't mean to imply he wasn't healthy. A hernia really isn't a serious matter and, if repaired, he will lead a perfectly normal healthy life.

i just that i have only had him 5 days and already there's a health concern that is very exspensive.......im just not a happy camper right now this is my first yorkie and im selfish i guess i want a healthy one!! something that when i want to breed i can now now i cant do anything like that with him....

I was just thinking, you said you signed a contract. Does the contract have a provision for genetic defects? Usually they give you at least 6 months or a year (some even lifetime) for genetic defects, which is what this is.

i see nothing on gentic defaults would you like me to scan the contract and email it to u??

i have filled out his CKC reg. papers what do i do about that?

Was the vet you went to a vet you knew from before or one the breeder suggested. It kinda sounds to me like the vet & breeder might be in cahoots since the vet noticed the first day, but didn't say anything very strange.

i used this vet before but a different location and same goes for her same vet office different location

If it's not there you probably do not have a legal standing for return, but maybe the vet calling saying he noticed the defect within the first time period would help.

I'm unfamiliar with CKC, but with AKC you would just have to file a supplemental transfer form and pay $5.00. I'm sure CKC has the same thing.

ok i just talked to her, she said that she was in the middle of another problem but that she would probably give me my money back, but she would call the vet and me tomorrow

I got my furbaby, when I didnt have a clue about yorkies or hernias or nothing,I had no idea, anyways what I wanted to say is my Yorkie supposedly had a hernia, the lady told me, so my husband told her he would only pay 700 instead of 850 dollars, Well she took it, and I got my puppy. When I took him to the vet, I had him checked by to different vets and they said no hernia, maybe it closed up itself or what , but, I dont know. I got real lucky with this, now that I see how much it would cost to fix, She had said about 50 dollars, righttttttttt........ This lady was a shyster. I got a puppy with two turned out front feet really bad, and god only knows what else, he has also had to have his teeth took out, which I had no clue this could happen either, dumb me, just thought I wanted a little lap dog, didnt research just took first one I saw, Had I to do it all over again, I would spend the money and get a puppy from a really good breeder with referrals from others. I love my Harley boy, dont get me wrong, but, I get horrified when i think of what could or could still go wrong, Good luck to you and I would spend the extra money now, for peace of mind, because you just dont know what to exspect. I would have a hard time even after 5 days, giving the puppy back, hope all works out for you.

I am so sorry to hear that your baby has these hernias. If I were the breeder, I would at least past for the surgeries or refund your money or make an arrangement that both of you would be happy with. Since IMO inguinal hernias are as a rule genetic, you could never breed any dogs of either sex that are related to him. So, if she will give your money back, I would say start a puppy fund and when you have at least twice what you paid for the puppy, start intrviewing breeders who are reputable. Most puppies are sold as pet quality and the contract is a S/N one especially when the registry is AKC.
I live near Annapolis and I know the prices are outrageous so you are gonna need at least $1500.00 for a female that MIGHT be breed quality. There are some show breeders in your area BUT they sell with a S/N contract so you will need to do a lot of research to find a responsible, reputable breeder who will mentor you in a breeding program.

I am taking remmie to get a second opinion this week i already know where to get the surgury for a lot less! i may also be getting a yorkie free! i am waiting on the details, a friend of a fried is marrying a man in the army and cannot keep the pup, i dont know the sex but i believe it is 5 months old i should here something around Monday!! i am keeping my fingers crossed!!

I would seriously consider looking for a new vet. There is no excuse for not telling you of his concerns that he had on the first visit. He should have said something...that he suspected hernia or SOMETHING.

i know, i said as much to the vet that day!!!
i dont even know if he is right!!! because i dont feel anthing now and a vet told me that you would feel it all time if it were true! the vet also wanted to charge me around $1000.00!!! for him to do or more with a different doctor, i found it for a lot less!!! a vet down the street said $50.00 per hernia plus anesthia, cant beat that, if he still needs it!!! i was told it might heal it self, i am hoping for that!!!
