How do I know? How do I know if the puppy's are getting enough milk? I tried milking the mom's nipples and I can't get milk out of all of them. Could some not work? The puppies hate the esbliac. I have tried the karo syrup and a little sugar, but they won't drink it. The mother will not lay with them for long. I have them in a baby swimming pool, she will feed for about 20 or 30 minutes then she lays right outside of the pool. There are also 2 little ones that I am worried about. Some are twice as big as them. What can I do for them and what do I watch for? (She is feeding 9 pups) |
you need to take their weights EVERYDAY! did you record their weight at birth? that's how you know if they are eating enough. |
Puppies that are not getting enough to eat will cry, feel cold and limp. Weighing the pups every day is a good idea. Since it's such a large litter I would feed the four smallest in one setting and then the next set. Make sure you keep the puppies warm enough if Mom's not staying with them. A puppy won't drink from a bottle if it is cold or the formula is not the right temperature. You might look for a product called Milkade which will help the dam produce more milk for large litters. |
Formula temperature should be 101 degrees (a dog's body temperature). I've seen puppies that will not take it at 99 degrees, but suck eagerly at 101. |
I agree with everyone else... weigh them.... they should be gaining a few tenths of an ounce per day... (at least). Let mom feed the smaller pups first. Best of luck... Keep us posted.:) |
