help please My yorkie had 9 pups wed and I am worried about the mom. She is not acting normal. She is breathing funny when she nurses, and ignores me sometimes (she never does that). I have taken her to the vet and she says everything is fine but I know she doesn't feel good. The vet told me not to give her turkey, which she loves and since the puppies were born she has been eating pro plan selects puppy food. I am curious about wether she needs any other vitamin supplements. Can anyone help? |
:getwellso :angel2dl: :angel2dl: well i think you take prize for most puppies from a yorkie but as far as mommy is concerned, just keep up w these post b/c many people here have experience and will give you good advise. ahh the poor baby. |
I can't help you with your questions, but someone will come along shortly to help you out. Just wanted to say....that's a lotta puppies...phew, that makes me tired. I hope momma feels better soon. |
wow . .9 pups . . . that's the largest litter I have ever heard of . . .can't help you but am sure our breeders from the community will be able to shed some light regarding your concern. Welcome to YT |
With that many pups I would make sure she is also getting a sup. Mix in her food some plain yogurt or cottage cheese. Have you taken her temp?? When did she deliver? Were all the Placentas delivered? |
HEAVENS! 9 PUPPIES! How big is she? Are you giving her calcium supplements? If not, you could be in for some big trouble. I'd give her 1 - 1 1/2 crushed tablets mixed with meals through out the day. This is the time that she needs the extra calcium or else she could get eclampsia... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=eclampsia Also, you could give her some goat's milk. Mix it 1 can goat's milk to 1 can water. I add a little sugar to mine just for grins. Boil a chicken and debone/shread and mix with rice with the broth. It'll be good in protein. Moms need to eat several times a day in order to produce milk. Also, you may want to mix cottage cheese with dry food but you need to start all of this immediately. |
Also, you may want to supplements the pups several times a day to help mom out. Nursing pups takes A LOT out of moms and with a litter that large, I highly recommend it. |
She delivered on 5/3 Wed. All of the placentas were delivered. I haven't taken her temp. I don't really know how to. She had all of the puppy's at the vet. The vet told me that all adult dogs are lactose intolerant. Should I still mix cottage cheese or yogurt in her food? I have also started to try to supplement the pups on Esbilac meal replacement to prevent milk fever, but they don't like it |
Nine!!!???!!! Welcome to YT! How big are the mom and dad? I never heard of 9 puppies delivered to a yorkie. Pictures please!!! Hope mom is doing better.:) |
Kimberley gave you some good advice You need to follow it carefully. Good luck with the babies and the mom. That's one heck of a heavy load to put on a female's body. You are going to have to commit to helping her for a few weeks. You need a mentor that you can call all hours of the day and night, and I wish you had come on while your girl was still pregnant so you could have been prepared for this. Do you know anyone in your local area that breeds yorkies and has had a few years experience? If so, you need to contact them right away and ask for their help. Personally I am not sure your vet knows what they are talking about. I wonder how many small dogs they have dealt with. My heart goes out to you!! You have a lot on your plate right now. Try to stay calm, and keep plugging away. The health and well being of your puppie's mom is top priority right now. HUGS! And welcome to YT! |
I also would immediately begin calcium supplementation by way of cottage cheese and give yogurt and increase protein by way of chicken (turkey has a high fat content so it is harder to digest) and watch her carefully, especially at about 3 weeks post whelping for calcium deficiency (eclampsia) and if she shows any weakness take her in immediately. |
Congratulations on your 9 babies. I hope some of hids advice gets mom to feeling better. Is she a larger yorkie? Post pictures when you get some time, like in about 2 months. LOL. |
WOW. 9 Puppies ? WOW. GOOD LUCK ! |

Add just a touch of Karo syrup to the puppys milk. It doesn't take much. I have found that the pups will except it a little better...:) |
