Did you ever hear this about a dog's tongue? 3 Attachment(s) I heard (don't remember where) that if a dog's tongue is pink, it's a purebreed. If it's pink and black (like my uncle's dog Psilo) than the dog is a "mutt." I was just wondering if anyone knows if this is true, or if it's an urban legend? Baby's tongue is pink, but the back of her throat is pink and black. Anyone else's furbaby like that? Thank! PS. Below are some new pics of Baby and Psilo and a picture of Psilo's tongue that I didn't even realize I had. ;) |
No it is not true..a purebred Chow has a blue tongue. |
My lab has black patches on his tongue, this is common with dogs He always had pure pink tongue then we noticed the patches and looked into it and it perfectly normal and has nothing to do with breeding pure or mixed |
my "all-american, heinz 57" has a pink tongue, and we know he's not a purebred! :) |
I think thats a myth as you have chows with black tongues. I think it just depends on the breed. :animal36 |
It all depends on the breed....as the example given has shown.. I have even seen champion bred chows with a little pink in their tongue or gums and that used to disqualify them from the show ring... My wondermutt has a beautifully pink tongue and ....He's ALL mutt! |

Completely A Myth A colored tongue- REGARDLESS of color -gives no indication of a purebred or a mix breed lineage. None. I have a Black Russian Terrier that has a black (no, not blue) patch on the roof of her mouth as well as on the far back of her tongue. She is a documented purebred going back at least 12 generations. Alongside a few Akitas that I show, they too will have black pigment within the mouth or on the tongue (rarely) and this is not an indicator that there is a breed within the lineage (wayyyyy far back maybe before the breed ever went on the books as a "purebred") that typically is known for pigment on the tongue or mouth like: Shar-Pei; Thailand Ridgeback; Chow So no. It means nothing w/ regards to purity of lineage. |
I have a female yorkie that has a black spot on the tip of her tongue. :D :D :D |
