New to Having BABIES!!!!! Please Help Me!!! [COLOR=Purple]Hello all, I've posted on here before, well it's been awhile since then I've become a real Grandmother to Kayleigh Nicole ( A real baby! LOL) on Feb 18, 2006...She is beautiful and now I watch her during the day while her mother works...I get her @ 5:15 am and she leaves around 2 pm every day M-F...And this is one reason I've not be on here to much for I'm so tired by the time she leaves and my other girls get home from school...I have a 22, 20, 10 & 7 year old girls and my 1st grandchild. She ties into this question too!!!!! Well Tiffy went into heat on Feb 24th and blead the 1st week so I didn't put her and Teddy together until the 3rd of March (She is 1 & 1/2 this month & this is her 2nd heat and Teddy will be 1 & 1/2 in June) well I thought Teddy could get to her well he couldn't...I took a old phone book and wrapped it up and put it in their big cage and that I didn't think worked, so I put a small chair in there she climbed in it and sat down...So I just let them be...I kept them together from March the 3rd to March the 19th to see if anything would happen, he tried and tried and she let him...Well I myself thought well he didn't get her pregnant, I ask others and they said unless they got stuck then he didn't get her pregnant...My Dad said NO that isn't always true (He breads reg. Beagles and he said sometimes U don't even know if they do mate.) Well now it's been what 8 weeks tomorrow since the 3rd of Feb (Going by Fridays) and I now think she is pregnant...She is getting bigger in the belly, her nipples are bigger some and she is just not the same dog...So meek and mellow, minds so well, acts as tho she has been beat when U speak her name (She NEVER acted this way before I mated them and I don't like how she acts now like she is so scared of us), she's not having ANY potty accidents in the house now, she goes to her cage (We have a 2 caring cages for each of them, we leave the doors open on them if they want to go in & lay down they do, we also have a puppy bed out for them too) and lays there during the day and she NEVER did that before (Do U think she might go into her cage & have them since she is going in there all the time?) ...She is with ME all the time. Teddy was the one who was ALWAYS on my lap, she was the one who was on my husbands lap ALWAYS...But now she acts like she wants me all the time...I fell her belly and it feels as tho there are puppies kicking...U can't see it really for her hair but U can feel it...I went ahead and gave her a hair cut since I think she might have puppies and it will be getting hot here soon (We live in Indiana) How do I know she is pregnant without taking her to the Vet? I think she will be due if she is anywhere from May the 5th to May 19th...I just read where the lady has that welping site for the other dogs...I went and read all of it and about how to take her temp. I'm gonna do that in the morning. I've helped 1 dog in my lifetime deliver pups...I'm getting nervous now and scared...That's sounds so strange here I am a Mother of 4 beautiful daugthers and a beautiful granddaughter (Which I attended her birth!! and did very well) how will I know she is in labor? How will I know what to do? Please help me...We're suppose to have a yard sale the 5th & 6th of May but I told my daughter (She thinks I'm nuts for wanting to wait!!!) I think we should put it off until the 1st of June incase Tiffy has pups...If Tiffy goes into labor on me say before I get Kayleigh to babysitt should I tell Val (Kayleigh's Mom) to stay home from work...So I can help Tiffy and not have a newborn and her to deal with @ the same time? What if Tiffy goes into labor on me while Val's @ work do I call her home from work so she can get Kayleigh and I can help Tiffy? Do this sound nuts? I just love my baby pups and want the best for them... Then there's Teddy he is so jealous and CAN'T STAND me to spend much time with Tiffy. Do I put him up in his cage until she has her pups? He I know won't leave her alone while she is having them...What do I need to help Tiffy deliver her babies??? I mean I need to know it all please know this is my 1st YORKEE BIRTH!!! HELP please!!!!!! I know I can get Great and Good advise here from U all. I'm sorry this is so long but I needed to explain it all to U. Oh and PLEASE PRAY for us!!!!!!!! I need ALL the help I can get!!!!! Thanks and Many Hugs, Lee |
Hi Teddy, I dont know that much about this, but I would say take your baby to the vet and get an x-ray and see if there is a way to narrow down that due date range so you'll have a better idea of when your gonna panic (hahaha) that way you wont spend 2 whole weeks in panic. Nervous loving Moms make the best ones....... |
Hi... I don't know why you would avoid going to the vet. An x-ray will help determine how many to expect and perhaps on how far along she may be. She might not even be pregant... it might be false pregnancy where they have ALL the symptons of a real one. Also... having the vet know you are expecting puppies is a good thing..... cause she might not be able to pass then..... then you will need to go in for a c-section. And sometimes it has nothing to do with the size.... I had a pregnant girl who 2 placentas was tangled inside her. She was in labor and nothing was happening.... we were about ready to run to the vet but my mentor... who is over 20 years experienced, went in with her pinkie fingers to yank a little girl out. It was a lot more complicated than that bit I don't know how to explain it. All puppies and mom did great and already living happy lives. Since this is your first puppies.... no amount of reading is going to prepare you for that moment..... for I remember mine and I was a basket case. You really should have a vet on hand. And yes... keep the daddy away from the mom when she is in labor. She doesn't need the added stress! Give her some plain yogurt now and you should really have her on puppy food now for all the nutrients. Have the supplies ready now. Get a whelping kit prepared. I think the site you mention is Debbie Jensen's right? It is a great site. I actually flew to Vegas to meet her and her little Gabe before I started breeding. YT is also a great place for info..... but instead of asking general questions, you should be more specific. There is just soooooo much to know that it's hard to say everything. But I wish you the very best and I hope your babies are healthy and mom does well. ANd yes... since you don't know the due date... I would for sure postpone your yard sale! |
Taking an xray not only will allow you to know the pups position and size (making sure the diameter of the heads are not larger than her she can handle on a natural whelp) I would highly suggest you xray to pinpoint the whelp date as well, your whelp dates can not be right you are guessing within two weeks. Average date would be 63 days from first tie. There is a chance as well she is not pregnant and going through a false, if you are unsure of any ties. With a false she will still experience weight gain, swollen vulva and teats. You need verification she is pregnant, if indeed she is...... Keep your male away and separated! Feed her HIGH QUALITY puppy food if she is indeed pregnant, she needs this added nutrician now and through nursing. Whelping...you still have time to find someone experienced to assist you, call your vet and ask if they know of any local breeders that would be willing to assist... You need the proper whelping supplies and feed! You need to make sure you understand the signs of a mom in distress, full labor without resting in between for more than a hour...YOU GET TO THE VET! You need to make sure she dispells every placenta (if not she could get a very bad infection and left unnoticed could die) If you have any doubt you need a clean out shot administed by your vet of oxytocin. You need a heat pad (set on low under and to one side of the whelping box)to keep these babies warm, the first three days are critical they can not regulate their own heat at all, if they get chilled they can die. You need to keep all drafts and airconditioning off around new born pups. Room temp should be warm never chilled. You need to make sure each and every puppy is latching on properly and staying on the teat. You need to have new born puppy formula and bottles on hand, in case you need to suppliment. You need to know if a puppy is crying it is not getting enough food and or warmth! gosh I could go on and on...but this should get you started in the right direction, please TAKE YOUR GIRL TO THE VET for xray and a well check! If you need any help call or pm me! I hope this helps |
Sounds to me like you got alot of great advise here. I would most definately do the x-rays, they are about $180.00 here in AZ. and worth every penny to know when the last pup is born and you can take a sigh of relief. If she is to deliver in her crate then put a blanket over it making sure it covers all sides for warmth and to keep out drafts and for moms security (dogs are den animals afterall). You will have to open the sac at the pups face and have a bulb syring on hand to aspirate the new pups if they need help. If Mom is pushing hard for over an hour she may need a vets help. I'm sure you will do fine, it shows alot that you are asking questions. Good luck and best wishes for a smooth delivery. |
Thanks so very much!! Thanks to each of U for U're thoughtful help! I went today and bought her a big tote like the one on Debbie Jensens site. I want her to get use to it before she has her babies. Can U feel the puppies move if she has a false pregancy? I can feel them move now all the time, everytime I put my hand on her belly by her ribs. I will call the vet in the morning for her ultrasound. I wasn't trying to get out of a ultrasound I just didn't think they had to have one...But I guess they do need it. I have her and Teddy on Since Diet and just switched them to regular adult food, I'll go get a bag of puppy food for her tho. I will get all I need rounded up for her and those babies...Anything else any of U might think I might need?? I am getting excited...I guess if she isn't pregnant I'll be so disappointed but that is life. I tell U she is so so differnet now...I can't get over it, she and he clings to me. They are @ my every move. She is so sweet now where she use to be hateful. Will she change her temperment after she has puppies if she is pregnant? I hope U all will go on and on about having babies and what it take to be ready...If she isn't pregnant then it may help someone else. Oh I already have the heating pad. Blankets and towels...And I'm taking her temp now took it this morning and tonight for the 1st time...She was good with it this morning but wasn't so good this eveing...I bought a new themomter for her that is a digital and has a felexable end to it, she is a bigger Yorkee and I knew if she tried to get up a glass one wouldn't work for her...Sure enough this eveing my husband had to help me hold her...Do any of U take U're Yorkee's temps? Please tell me all U can about it all...As far as questions I really don't know what to ask yet...Will after this one I bet!!! I went to the Debbie site and read EVERYTHING on there about it all and the day she goes into labor I will have that site on my screen just in case and have the phones near by for the Vet...I think I'll put her bed in here in my spare bedroom where my computer is, she comes in here with me all the time and that way no one will bother her, she won't have no drafts for the puppies, they can all be kept good here. Teddy won't bother her for I can put a gate up to keep him out...How do U all weigh the puppies? I have Postal digital scales... Would that work to weigh them? Well thanks again so much, Many Hugs, Lee |
Her temperment may change, she will become very protective of her babies after her milk comes in so don't take it to heart if she growls at you after a couple of days, it is instinct. Weigh each pup once a day to be sure they are not losing weight. If one is you may have to supplement or keep putting the pup on mom every hour. |
Were Gonna Be Grandparets!!!!! I'm So Excited!!!!!! Hello all, I called Tiffy and Teddy's Vet this morning and they said to bring her in...So I did he felt her belly and said she was gonna have babies, She weighted 11 lbs 6 ozs...I couldn't believe she was that heavy, My granddaughter is 11 lbs 12 ozs...I'll have to get photos of them together at about the same weight!! I ask about an ultrasound to let me know how many she would be having, he said U couldn't really tell that way good, but that with an X-Ray he could count the backbones, but he said he with X-Ray that 1 might be under the other one and that if that is all I needed it for then not to get it. This Vet has had Tiffy since she was born and Teddy since I got him @ 6 weeks old. He ask if Teddy had gotten any bigger since the last time he saw him I said no not really, he said as long as he was smaller (That he is) then Tiffy then she should have no problems. He said that if she did to call him or bring her straight in...I ask about how I would know if she was through having babies, he said she would loose a lot of water when she had her babies and if I thought there might be 1 more then I could feel and I'd feel the baby, he said if I was in doubt then just bring her in & he'd check her out. I ask about getting extra milk just incase she had one that wouldn't nurse, he said try my best to make sure ALL of them got to her, said if there was one that didn't or she pushed one aside run in & he'd give me some and a bottle. He also said to bring her and the pups in before they was 3 days old to have their dew claws removed & tails docked and he'd check her too. How soon after she has our babies can I give her a bath? I have her bed ready now she's moved into it tonight...Oh and he told me if she is putting out a little milk then I think he said (Can't really remember) with in a week she'd go into labor and he told me to take her temp and if it went below 98 then within 12 to 24 hours she'd be in labor. So any thought would be very apprecatied now...I thank U for all the web sites I'm gonna try to read up on them. Thanks for all U're help too. Hugs, Lee mommy to Tiffy and Teddy! |
Loading photos Hello I am trying to post photos here and can't for the life of me...I wanted to show U all X-Mas photos of all 6 of my babies (My daughters and puppies!) but can't get them to load, it keeps saying the files is to big. I've got them JPG and the other way to and it won't take either one. So can anyone help me? Thanks & Hugs, Lee |
Taking Temp for Labor Hello all, I've been taking Tiffy's temp since Thur. Morning, (On Thur I just read I should take her temp to see when she is in labor), well I went & bought her a new Reli On digital thermometer with a flexable tip well when I take it do I add a degree like U do with babies when U take them through the rear? See this morning we let her and Teddy out to potty and our neighbor had a wrotwiller  (Spelling there!) and that dag gone thing came flying in our yard, I was screaming my head off... Justin (My husband) came out and grab our babies. He said Tiffy was so stiff with her body...Well Tiffy was really upset...I thought oh no will this throw her into labor??? (If that happens?) and I waited about 2 hours and took her temp...Well it's 98.9 is what the thermometer says...That's NO degrees added. Last night it was 100.2 nothing added & the vet said it was 101.2 yesterday @ 9:45 am. So now I'm worried...So I thought well I'll let her out to potty and take it again...Well just my luck here came another dog...On a leash thank goodness and she ran to the edge of our yard and I was saying Stay Tiff...My husband ran to get her and she was better this time...Not as scared so now I'm gonna wait about another hour and take it again so she is calmer. This baby having is worse then my daughter having our granddaughter! LOL!...I'm so protective of her. I need all the help here I can get! Thanks and Hugs, Lee~ :aimeeyork Tiffy and Teddy's Mommy |
The temp should continue to drop and then it will slowly start going back up again. When this happens, labor should begin within 24 hours. Keep a close eye on her and don't let her out of your site. They do start the braxton hick contractions but when they have the "tail-raising" labor with contractions, a pup should appear within 30 minutes. Have all emergency vet numbers on hand. Don't let your girl go much longer than 30 minutes of pushing without producing a pup. |
Thanks so much! I just took her temp @ 12:50 pm and its 99.7 by a digital thermo. without any degrees added to it..I wonder if she is at the start of her labor? I've not left her @ all, my daughter just ask me to go somewhere with her and I said NO Tiffy might be in labor...I tell U this is nerve wrecking but exciting @ the same time. Thanks again, Hugs, Lee :aimeeyork ~Tiffy and Teddy's Mommy |
