Breeding question... I need some advice from anyone that doesn't mind a couple of "dumb" questions from a first-time yorkie owner. Lily is 9 months old and weighs 5+/- lbs. I'm interested in breeding her when the time is right. I know I need to wait until at least her second cycle and therein lies my first question (I'm embarrassed to even ask!). How do I know when she's gone through a "true" cycle? At about 6-7 months she went through a period of humping everything in sight but I never saw any bleeding. Any ideas what that was all about? Every animal I've ever had has been spayed so this is all new to me. Also - how do I go about finding a stud? I'm not breeding for show but I do want purebred puppies. BTW - I'm new here...my name is Pamella and I live in Virginia. Any help is welcome and appreciated. |
hello and welcome to YT one of my females went thru a "false" heat she swelled up big but no blood and my male wasn't interested in her. so i knew it wasn't a true healt. when she does come into heat she will bleed for about 1 week and then have spotting and light colored discharge for about another week I'm talking about how my females are generally .of course every female is different-- just like all women have different peroids. It's like they are having a period. Of course I recommend that you take your female to a Vet whose's opinion and judgement you trust and having her checked and see if she's a good candidate for breeding. size isn't the only thing that matters. If he/she recommends not breeding then don't do it. I just found out today that my little "Lover Boy" that's his name is not going to be able to be used for stud, breaks my heart, and as beautiful as he is and wonderful personality we are not going to be breeding him. He had grade 1 luatating petalleas (bad kneees) this is heritary. so are alot of other things; so please have her checked out before you breed her. |
Welcome to YT It's a good place to get questions answered. And our policy here is No question is a dumb question. I'm not a breeder so I have no answers for you, I just wanted to welcome you |
You will definitely know when she is in heat. She'll start licking that area quite a lot and then you'll notice the swelling. THEN, the bleeding starts...bright red for the first week (or so). The second week is when they are ready to breed. Bleeding will lighten up some and she will be very large in that area. Third week is when they start to go out of heat. |
