Need Advice this is Lady's second time being pregnant, the first time was not successful, she ate two of them, and the other two did not make it. I'm afraid, can this happen again? She is 18month old now and I think ready to give birth any minute. She is pregnant with 5 pups. I took her temp and it is 97 degrees. |
Sounds like you're going to have a long night. Keep a close eye on mom when she has the pups. You may even only allow mom in there to feed and then take her right back out. You don't want a repeat from last time. |
I have no advice for you but good luck! I will keep lady in my thoughts. |
Good luck. I will have you and mom in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everything goes well. Welcome to YT. |
Did she have her puppies yet? Im keeping her and puppies in my prayers |
whoa...what do you mean she ate two of them? you mean when they were born...she ate the puppies? if yes...that is disgusting. |
There is a lady here who breeds springer spaniels, the mom went into labor an outside dog they brought her in to deliver. When she was done they moved them back outside the next am the pups were all gone (8 of them) she had ate them. They can do this when they are upset, hormonal problems ,never being around pups before, and then some are just not made to be mommies. I personally would keep an extra eye on her and if she does this again I would spay her.And she was awful young for the first litter also.Hope things go well this time for you. Was her first birthing upsetting to her, too many people around or a strange atmosphere? |
Lady may have been bred to young the first time.. You want your female to be mature enough to be able to take care of a litter of puppies! I personally would not have bred her again from the experience of her last litter.. I have a friend that purchased a female to add to her program.. The breeder she purchased the female from had not told her about her first litter.. Well when this female whelped she immediately started to eat the first puppy! My friend and her husband were able to save all but one since the female would practice this habit right after whelping a puppy.. When it was all said and done the breeder they had purchased this female from had also did the same with her first litter! My friend only would let the mother nurse the puppies and she would be right there holding the mother while the puppies nursed.. But that was the only thing they let the mother do.. They spay and placed the mother after this litter.. Please keep us updated on how your female does.. |

Lady Well Lady had all 5 pups on friday night, she started at 10:45pm and was done by 12:30am. Not a single problem, so far so good, she is also very attentive. She leaves her pen to eat and do her business and comes right back. I'am so proud of her, I hope she keeps up the good work. They are all very active but I seem to have a "crybaby" is that ok? I seem to think he/she is either cold or hungry because when I put him/her on top of mom he/she quites down. Are my puppies "safe"? What are my odds? Is there anything I should be looking for? or worrying about? I really do appreciate all the advice and prayers. Thank you all so very much! Oh, another question I live in a two story, the pen is in my bedroom, can it be moved so when I'm downstairs I can keep a eye on it and vice versa? Or are they ok on there own? Am I just being over vigilante? |
Thank you |

Congrats on your new babies, the one crying make sure she/he is eating ...take the larger one and suppliment him/her with puppy formula and place the screamer on a teat often (every hour). Her milk should be coming in stronger by today. Make sure the babies are warm place a heat pad under the whelping box at one side, dont cover the entire bed so mom can get to the other side its too warm for her. Since mom had such a large litter make sure you give her a lot of extra feedings of protein like chicken and rice, goats milk, cottage cheese, cheese mixed into her quality dry puppy food, also give her 1/2 tums in the am and 1/2 in the pm. She needs a lot of protein and liquid for such a large litter. Hope this helps, best of luck and congrats once again. |
Hope everything works out okay..I will keep the mom and pups in my prayers:) |
Congrats on the new pups. I will have mom and the pups in my prayers for everything to go well. Please keep us posted. |
