Advice Please from Experience... Hi guys, I have a little female yorkie at 8-9 weeks still 1 lb. 9 3/4 oz the puppy chart says she will be 4.20 as adult. To the Breeders with years of experience, is'nt she going to be too small to breed? I need some good sound advice as to whether to keep her or sell her to an Approved Home. I'm technically not a breeder yet, but I know that those growth charts can very just a bit. They are not always on the money. I would say that if she is 4 lbs. for me that would be too small to breed... Sorry I wasn't much help.. |
I would really doubt that she will make a safe breeding size at that weight. How big are parents and grandparents on both sides? |
Cali was 1 lb at 10 weeks and now at 10 months she is 4.4 lbs. So I would think she will be smaller. |
you never know. I bought an 8 month yorkie and she weighted 4 lbs. the breeder said she wanted her females to 6 lbs. but she gained weight and got bigger she now weighs 5 lbs. and she has 12 week old puppies. so sometimes they bigger. |

My little Yorkie was 12 weeks at 1 lb 4 oz and now is two years old and weighs 5 lb 6oz. and my other was 1 lb 2 oz at 8 weeks and is now 5 plus pounds. |
IMO, I would say yes, she will probably be too small to breed if her adult weight is under 5 pounds. However, I think it is also important to recognize that size should not be the only deciding factor on whether or not she should be bred. There are many other health concerns that should be addressed and identified...most favorably, these should be considered before even deciding on a potential stock dog. :) |
size She is too young to decide..why not wait until at least 12/16 weeks..? By then you will have a better idea of size and quality. You should find it is quite easy to place a female at any age. Best wishes.. |
I too was really up in the air wondering if Tatum would get big enough to breed. She was exactly 1 pound at 9 weeks and now at a little over 2 years is right at 5 pounds - don't have a recent exact weight. I guess she technically is large enough to breed but after all the "horror stories" I read about breeding these little babies, I got her spayed - can't remember when but at an early age. I guess I'm just saying those weight charts aren't always accurate. |
