advice please my maggie is due to give birth next week i was told that because her nipples are all swollen thats a bad sign and she may get pre eclampsia is this true i am very worried also do you advise giving bitches calcium supplements all through pregnancy |
my answer is ==No and No== if your vet told you this;get a secant opinion |
No...the nipples swell because they are preparing for the birth of the pups. They are filling with colostrum and milk. Once or a day before the pups whelp, give calcium supplements (not straight calcium) 1/2 tablet (crushed mixed with wet food) twice a day. Tums with calcium is a good one. |
thanks thank you for the advice the advice i got was from a lady who has bred a couple of litters and said that calcium should be given everyday of the bitches pregnancy i thought this was a bit over the top, she also gives her bitch lactol milk, which is for bottle feeding puppies do you advise this i am already very nervous about the birth and i was panicking about the risk of eclampsia |
Only bottle feed if the mom is not producing milk or enough milk. The best thing for the pups is to have mama's milk! So if they are nursing..... let it alone..... do not bottle feed. Watch over the pups and you will be fine. |
thanks for putting my mind at rest iam so nervous about the birth and that the pups and mum are fine i could not sleep that night thinking that i may have done it all wrong and maggie might have pre eclampsia, the lady in question does not always bottle feed the pups but she does give the mum the lactol milk they must have calcium overload! |
hi all just to let u all know maggie seems to be fatter by the day she laid on her back today for a tummy tickle and had a lot of trouble getting up , she is of course sleeping lots but still enjoys a little play around with Dexter although she has no choice as far as he is concerned |
