Please help me understand my yorkie, I had this in the wrong section!

Hello,

I am wondering if any of you have experience this sorta of behavior in Your yorkie. My Yorkie is about 4 weeks pregnant - I am assuming this, did everything right with breeding just waiting for ultrasound to confirm etc.
She has been acting quite strange, She does have the typical i am pregnant has throwin food up here and there.. I first started to notice that she wasn't gaining weight rather losing weight and I am feeding her good food, dry food avialable always, wet food cottage cheese, sometimes grated cheese.. small portions throughout the day of this. And its all puppy food etc. So why isnt' she gaining weight? I checked her poops no worms - can't deworm cos she is prego but there is no worms, poos solid and no blood they are great looking poops.
So here is where i worry - she walks around the premiter of my livign room, kitchen so for example all along the couch sides and the outer edges of my home sometimes it looks like she is going to walk right into the wall - she goes very slowly like she is this old lady - she drinks her water and today she puts both feet in so she comes out of the kitchen like she just took a bath. She seems off balance and not perky like she once was - she walks and walks where she should be sleeping instead. She won't come when i call her at first.. she won't lookat me in the eye when i pick her up... When i get her squeek toy she perks right back like her old self - but then doesn't want to bring the toy back. I worry - she seems disorientated. I do have a vet appt for her but impatient to wait for an answer i thought i would ask you guys. She is not a big Yorkie she is quite small and can't afford to be loosing weight rather gaining weight.
Thanks for your help and any advice in advance.. i did give her crackers to settle her tummy.. any suggestions please give me

If your gal hasnt gained weight you may not have had a successful breeding. I would wait it out, have xrays at 50 days.

go here and put her breed date it will give you details as what to expect as she progresses in her pregnancy.

hope this helps

I would think you need to get her to the vet ASAP

I am not a breeder or an expert by any means, but it sounds like there is something very wrong with your girl. I would tell your vet it is an emergency and get her in there ASAP.

It worries me that your girl is "very small", and she may be pregnant... :(

YorkieRini 04-18-2006 09:39 AM

I have to agree with Glad! Take her to the vet ASAP. That's what I would do if I were in your situation.
What your describing that's not normal behavior (losing weight, vomitting, walking into walls) pregnant or not. Yorkies are too small to take any chances. I'd rather take her to a vet and have him tell me, oh she's fine. Then make the assumption myself.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hugs,
Irene

Yeah.... I agree .... that is not normal. It sounds like something is wrong. When my girls are pregnant, they are still healthy and active. I have to try to ge tthem to be not so jumpy. They do tend to lose appetite later on in the pregnancy but it should not be at 4 weeks. I would go to the vet ASAP and bring in stool for testing.

Keep us posted!

Update

As it turns out my 2 year old Yorkie has liver shunt. The acid bile came back with levels of 65. and i think normal is 16. IT got worse after i posted and she started to salvate and just not look like her. I am so confused as she has never been sick ever, never shown these signs and 2 weeks ago she was this beautiful girl and her silly little self. She doesn't even know me right now - very sick little girl. Of course the vet bill is going up, up, up and there is all this grey area of what to do... I called the orginal breeder and of course she isn't backign this up and she quite well known, My kids are torn, they are sad and I feel powerless trusting the doctor. Any of you have experience with Liver SHunt Yorkies please post or email me privately. I live in Canada so i do know about the clinic in the states but i think you have to give up your dog to them and they will do the surgery on her but they keep her. I am trying to find other solutions for now.
She will be on the IV till Sunday or at least at the vet till Sunday.
Scary thing this Liver Shunt and just plain not fair.

WOW. I am so sorry to read this. But thankfully you rushed her in when you did. I had not had experience with LS but others on this forum have. I have seen some happy endings. I'll be praying and hoping for a happy ending for your little girl.

Hugs from Ohio,
Irene

wellll was she pregnant?

Yorkybaby 04-20-2006 09:14 AM

We don't know yet as nothing showed up in the US, another one will be done in a week. I sure hope she is not and she absorbs them. I can't see how she could possibly with how sick she is.

She is still at the Doctors she has been there since Tuesday and on a IV she is doing much better and not walking the walls and not salvating, i went to see her the other day ( thursday ) and she even knew who i was she actually looked me in the eye. The vet called later that day to tell me that this actually worked her up when she saw me which good news on her responses but not so good news on getting her better - no stress. So i haven't been able to see her. Today we get to bring her home as tomorrow she goes for the Ultrasound to find out which kind of shunt it is that she has. Where i am taking her is a specialist who specialzes in LS's. So i will have all my answers very soon.
I did contact the orginal breeder of my Yorkie and I feel she won't be helping me out on this one - she does not believe that the dog has LS - not many will take ownership on this one and that is sad. She told me i was thinking with my heart not my head and that she should be put down. I still can't believe that! Its impossible she is a big part of our family. The surgery i believe is 2,000-3,000. but i am trying not to think of that stage yet.

YorkieShadow I would defintely have an acide bile test done on your dog. I wish i had more info when i first started see my Yorkie do strange signs - i should of taken her in then and then she wouldn't of ended up in critical care on the drip - but again i didn't know - my advice would be to ask your Vet to do an acid bile test on her.

sylvan 04-23-2006 09:24 AM

It is very irresponsible of the breeder to not take this very seriously. She should at the least NOT ever breed the pair that carry this defect and inform anyone else she sold pups to from this breeding that they are at risk. Please post the name of the breeder to prevent anyone else from having to go through the heartache you are dealing with.
our prayers to you and your girl.

My vet seems to think it was the Ham my girl ate, I didnt know it at the time but my hubby had feed her porkchop too, so That was probaley what was wrong with her sense my Boy was sick too but not as bad. They are both fine now. The vet said that it did not sound like she was doing circles but trying to find a place to get comfy cause she was so sick at her tummy. I dont know but there will be no more pork for my two.
I will keep your little one in my prayers.
