Crossing the US/Canadian border Hi, I am not sure if this is where this thread goes, but I figured that breeders would probebly know best about this sorta thing. I bought my puppy from a lady in MI and I am bring her home on May 7th, by car. Does anyone know what papers and things are they going to ask for at the border? Or where I could find out? |
Necessary papers Kristal, Hi there! I am located in Northern NY and have had people cross the border here without problems. If the puppy is over 3 months, you need a rabies certificate. If not, you only need to get a health certificate from the breeder's vet so you can prove she is healthy. Once you get back home, you will have to get a license? or register the dog in Canada which your vet should be able to give you that info. Good luck and congrats on your new baby! Debbie |
I do not know if I will be of much help to you or not! But I would make sure that when the breeder has your puppy checked by the vet that she has the vet also write her out a Health Certificate for you to have with you when traveling back home with your new puppy.. We use to have a couple come into work and get a health certificate on their dogs when traveling to Canada for vacation.. How old is your puppy? If it is old enough for a rabies vaccination you would also want to have your breeder have that done also.. I would check with a local vet in your area to see what the age requirement for rabies vaccination is.. Hope this helps some!~ Melanie |
Thank you very much. I never really thought about it when I bought her. We go across all the time without any problems, it wasn't until my friend had problems bringing peaches across (lol long story) but then I thought, oh no what about a dog!!! I feel beter, thanks! :D |

You will also need the bill of sale because you have to pay the GST at the border. |
Really? That is crazy. :( Oh well, at least I get my furbaby. |
I live just across the border from Mi., and was considering purchasing a pup from there. I called Canada Customs and asked what was required to bring the dog across the border and they needed the bill of sale. If I remember correctly, they wanted updated vaccination record as well, but that was it. |
also, you might want to call right before you cross back to canada. depending on whom you hit, they might want to quarantine. That's what I was told last summer  |
