When to remove mom? I have a litter of 6wk old pups that just started eating soft food. When should I remove mom from the pups? They are not interested in eating the food because mom is still nursing them. She growls at them and doesn't want to nurse them but they are all over her until she lets them. What should I do to get the pups to eat the solid food? When is it time for mom to leave her pups? :aimeeyork |
I wean my pups at 4 weeks to about 4.5 weeks. Meaning mom is allowed to go in and out but pups will be introduced to soft food. After that.... when they are eating the soft, mom is not allowed in the pen.....I have a access door that I close. She can still stay by her pups and watch them but she is not allowed to feed them. The next few weeks are for interaction and socialization. My pups don't get released till at least 10 weeks.... mostly 11 to 12 weeks. Moms nipples are raw and sore at this point.... she did her part, now let her rest. She can be around the pups but no access. The pups will eat their own food. |

Gracie has always weaned her pups on her own. At around 5 weeks, she will not let them suckle. |
On the other side, know someone that her 4 months old pup that she kept was still suckling on mom. Mom let him and the breeder didn't stop it. |
So I should not let mom have access to the pups now? |
I'd let mom go in to clean her pups. However, I wouldn't allow the pups to suckle. You could get an ace bandage and wrap it around mom's teets and then put a onsie over her...just a suggestion. |
