Help mom with low calcium, and pups that want mom, what can i do Today has been one of those days, and now I need advice. I was very lucky, when I noticed Bridget acting weird this morning I called and got her in the vet right away. Turns out her calcium was way low, around a 4-5, they put her on iv fluids and calcium to help her and a few hours later I was able to bring her home. Now I have four puppies that have to be seperated from momma, they are lucky to be 4 weeks old, but still they are crying a lot. Bridget wants in to them so bad she is sleeping by the cage (playyard) I just dont know what to do for the pups, I did start to feed them gruel yesterday, but will they eat enough, the bottles suck, and I cannot get them to work..suggestions? Will they be ok without mom? |
youre so lucky to have caught eclampsia... you can let mom in tonight just to feed them NO MORE ...then take her out wrap her in a onezy with an ace bandage around it...the pups can be rather persistant getting at the teat...let her sleep with them if you like but only wrapped...if you dont keep her wrapped at night they will feed when they want, you cant let that happen!!! you can let her nurse but keep it to about 3 times a day and very short feedings...NO MORE!! also give your mom 1/2 tums in am and at night every day for the next ten days...as well cottage cheese and goats milk. if youve not begun weaning you need to now...start mixing your mush (ground like dust... dry dog food mixed runny with water or goats milk served a bit warmed) feeding them 3-4 times a day along with mom sparingly nursing...if you dont have goats milk...you can use baby rice cereal mixed with water and a bit of baby puree chicken or puppy canned food warm up as well a tad... I hope the vet helped you will all of this, if not feel free to pm me or email me at yorkiepassion@comcast.net keep us posted |
I saw your post in General earlier, and I'm so glad you posted over here in the Breeder's section. I knew someone would be able to help. Good luck, and please give updates. |
Thank you Kim, I have started them on a gruel, although instead of the goats milk, I was using the replacer. I will go look for the other in the morning. I think with these guys it is better to let her see them now and then, but they are unbelievablely persistant, one was trying to nurse through the bars, so mom is buddled and with us right now. I was glad to figure it out, actully I didnt know till after the blood work, I just knew something wasnt right. Is there anything else I should know, my normal vet was out today, and her partner only suggested 1/4 tab of tums daily, so will the extra be ok???Thanks so much, I am fairly sure you will hear from me as, I am a total worry wart, and have been pestering my mentor and vet all the time...I would rather be safe than sorry. Thanks again, and any info on weaning these guys would be great |
GOOD LUCK !! I see Kim already gave you some wonderful advice....Eclampsia scares ME and I'm not a breeder ......ALL THE BEST TO YOU and I hope you mommy is going to be A-OK... You were so smart to act so fast and get her to the vet - you probably saved her life |
Im so glad you got some good info on what to do. Im also glad you saw that things was not right and got mommy to the vet asap. I lost a little chi mommy years ago because of this same reason, and not knowing what to do and the vet not informing me on what to do. I wish you all the best. |

Good advice given by Kimberly. My Gracie had an eclampsia attack with her last litter and it is something I'll NEVER forget! It's VERY ugly to see. |
You might also want to talk to your Vet about this girl as she has experienced this with this litter, it could very well happen again if you breed her again. This happened to one of my girls last fall. Later on I had her spayed as both the ER Vet and my Vet warned me that it is more likely to happen again in future litters once it has happened. |
