The Right size male? I'm not a breeder, but I see breeding Yorkies in the near future, I love this breed and I want to educate myself more and more so when the time is right I will know more about Yorkies. My question is, when breeding, should you use a smaller male to a larger female? Will this make the female carry smaller pups to have a easier delivery? I hope this is not a stupid question so no one laugh at me! LOL :idontknow |
Yes, you should definately use a smaller male. It's not impossible to breed a larger male, but it is not advised. |
To me size is only a factor if the male is bigger then the female. I would even breed same size parents. But all my moms have to be at least 5 lbs. |
Breeding a smaller male to a larger female don't always mean that the puppies will be smaller . |
Moms must be over 5+ pounds. I like to use a smaller stud but if there is only 1 or 2 puppies even a 6 pound mom and 3 pound dad can throw some honkers that need c-sections. Also, Pat will tell you that you really need to know what is behind both parents before using them to produce a litter....Of course, there is much more to breeding and I am sure you will learn a lot as you do your research.. |
A 3.5 to 5 lb male is preferable and a female 5 to 7 lbs. But you need to know the background of both and the sizes of the parents and grandparents. Try to stick to breed standard in both your male and female. |
My pup's mother was 12 pounds and his father 4 1/2 pounds. Go figure! Anyway - you guessed it - I have a "big little Yorkie" .... which is perfect for me and my environment. He is about 8 1/2 pounds, and, honestly, he is still a very small little dog. Neither I nor the vet could believe that this little dog weighs as much as he does. He isn't tall or big, he's slight in build, and when you pick him up, there really doesn't seem to be much to him. The vet said, "He's just must be solid....or maybe he's eating rocks!!!!" He's going back to the vet in a week or two to get neutered, I'm anxious to see what he'll weigh this trip. Carol Jean |
