Need info on How to stud my male yorkie My yorkie is 17 mos old. I purchased him from a pet store and he has papers, though I have never registered him. I would like to do this very soon. I am not sure how to go about studding him out. What I would like is to get a pick of the litter or charge a fee. I also heard from someone that now a days you take the male to the vet and he extracts the sperm? (I am sorry if I sound ignorant! However I know nothing about the breeding process, obviously) and then it is implanted in the female? Is that true? Or do some breeders still do it the old fashion way? I am not sure if there is a resource I could read on how to breed my Yorkie...any thoughts..ideas? Please help, since I do want to eventually get Elvis fixed, so that he will stop marking my kitchen appliances!! :aimeeyork Speaking of marking..can that be stopped, even if he is not fixed? Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you. |
First of all, WELCOME TO YT!!! Now, down to the issues at hand...since you bought him from a pet store, I'm going to assume that you know nothing about his background. You haven't seen his parents or his grandparents. Just because a dog is "cute" doesn't mean that it should be bred (not that you have stated this). Have you had him tested for any genetic issues...liver shunts, heart conditions, have you had his knees checked for luxating patellas, etc.? There are so many factors to look at. Your best bet is to find someone to mentor you that can steer you in the right direction. Secondly, you haven't sent in his papers. Once you do, you need to also purchase a pedigree that you can get from AKC. This will determine if your dog comes from a pet pedigree or may have champions in his background. Price. Pick of litter is a very high price to pay for an unproven male. There are champion studs out there that one can purchase services from for as low as $500...CHAMPIONS. If any of this sounds rude or hurtful in any way, then I apologize. It wasn't meant to. I'm just trying to tell you what you can start to look for. Best of luck! |
You are absolutely right Kimberly. I wouldn't consider using any male without knowing the pedigree and background including all health issues. Genetic problems can skip generations(s) and so I would need to see the pedigree to know exactly what Yorkies are behind this stud dog (or bitch for any I might purchase). there have been previous threads on YT about breeder responsibilities if something goes wrong with a pup. As the owner of the sire, you would be contributing 50% of those genes to the offspring. |
Usually you would want to have the dog fixed before they start marking. This would lower the chances of the marking habit since it has not begun yet. Fixing him now or in the future does not mean he will not mark anymore, since he does now I think it will be a hard habit to break, IMO. You could put belly bands on him to help. |
when i first got romeo i had the same idea. romeo is champion sired and registered. i found a breeder who adored romeo and we tried to mate them the old fashioned way. he just didn't get it. no pups. then i signed him up with a service that matches you with breeders. no luck. i kinda wish he was fixed now. he does mark alot. not in my home , but i can't take him anywhere without peeing all over. the behavior is set and the neuter probaly won't change anything. plus, he now has a collapsed treachea. i genetic defect. so breeding is out of the question. i saw you are new. welcome. the people here give good advice. i've learned alot. |
In my past experience (with my toy poodle), using him as a stud will only make his marking habits even worse! It did with my poodle and I've heard others say that here on YT also. |
