How many take "pick of the litter"? I have been keeping my eyes open for a small male stud with qualities I desire for my program to be. Silk will probably come into hear within the next month or two. I do not want to breed her to Ceeby because of his age and the fact that I want to keep a female pup from her for Ceeby to breed to later. My husband has a new friend that casually mentioned he had a three pound stud. Of course, my husband jumped right on it. I was sitting there while he asked this guy all the appropiate questions. Turns out, it belongs to his wife. She first said she would like to trade him to us for two female pups. No way. I don't need two stud dogs. Then she said if we just wanted to breed, she would take female pick of the litter. I won't do that because Silk only has two pups at a time. Sooo, my question is, do you take pick of the litter? If not what is your stud fee? In this area, most yorkie pups sell for anywhere from 500-1200 dollars. She went in great detail about how hers was a "miniature yorkie'. Course I didn't speak my mind about that. Thanks |
I would explain that you want to keep the female from the litter and see if the stud owner will take a fee instead. |
stud Believe me, it is always best to pay and keep the entire litter yourself..BUT if you are dealing with anyone charging over $500 it better be a stud of excellent quality and pedigree...you can get top of the line service for much less then what many pet stud owners charge...so many think the fee is equal to the price of a puppy..not so. I am sure there are reputable Yorkie breeder in your general area that offer professional stud service. Good Luck |
Locally I can find an average stud for about $200. For a stud with better lines I can find one around 250-300. And for the tiny stud with exceltent champion lines I can find them between the 300-400 range. Now I do live in Idaho, and our community is used to not paying an arm and a leg for anything. If someone were to try and charge the price of a puppy for a stud fee they would be laughed out of the room. Demand for quality puppies here is high, before Bridget even had a solid number count on puppies, I had a list of people that were willing to buy her babies. I actully could have sold far more than what she had. Sorry rambling here, I guess my point is, unless you are trading puppy for puppy I would not do pick of the litter. I am doing this, trading my male for another male of equal quality. But everyone else is buying the babies. |
thanks everyone Thanks guys for the replies. I definately want to make sure I get a top quality stud for Silk. She has an excellent background . I also thought she Might not even have females but two boys. I wouldn't keep either. But, this particular lady wants a female. I will try to negoiate a price with her if he meets my qualifications. I kind of got the feeling that if she didn't get a female pup, she would charge the price of a pup but I really don't know yet. Again, thanks |

I paid POL with this last litter. It was a high price to pay but I wanted that quality of dog. I'll likely never pay it again, unless of course, something REALLY catches my eye! |
I wouldn't go for stud service from anyone who knew so little about the breed that they referred to their dog as a miniature yorkie....OR was willing to trade him for two girls. What does that say about what she knows regarding the health history of the pedigree....not much. |

I lucked out getting my two Judabob dogs. I don't think Ceeby's breeder had a clue but she does charge about double for her pups so maybe she does and just does not play it up. Of course, Patsy Coburn, whom I got Silk from, knew but she evidently thought Silk was used up. Altho she did tell me I might be able to have a couple of litters with her. Her only excuse for selling those five females at the time was that she "always culled her females at five years of age". Lots of "culling" going on there. She had some more adult females in the paper last weekend. |
Maybe you could call Pasty and she might be able to recommend a breeder with a stud to use with the qualities that you want~ I personally do not use my males for public stud and I do not use my females to another breeder's male.. I finally feel that I have my program at a place that I only need to use what I personally own~ Good luck!~ |
Pick of the litter is not that unusual but you can have an understanding and contract beforehand and many just pay a stud fee and not have to deal with all this. |
You need to find someone that has bred before and knows what they are doing. A good breeder that studs out her dog will first expect your dog to be tested for brucellosis as well as have a stud contract for you to sign. Many breeders will do pick of the litter or a fee. A stud contract also covers your back as well. For example if the first breeding isn't successful make sure the contract offers you another chance. If it doesn't a second time then most breeders will make you have your dogs reproductive system evaluated by a vet before a 3rd time is offered. Also make sure it is a PROVEN stud. Make sure you have seen the studs pedigree and registration prior to breeding. If you are to pay a fee (which alot of breeders will do this) then you have to pay upfront and NEVER pay more than $500... You can also do AI..(artificial insemination). It can be sent to you frozen and your vet can show you how to do that. It's not as hard as it sounds lol. or your vet can do it for you. Now a contract has to be drawn up on this but there are some that do. I knew a lady that used to stud out her dog and that is how she would do it sometimes. She showed her dogs and was a well known breeder so I'm sure if she did others will. She no longer does yorkies anymore or I would give you her name. Also some breeders will also sign an agreement that if only one pup is born then they are to be paid a fee instead of getting a pup. You really just need to decide which route u want to go and ask. Don't be afraid to ask them cause you just might be get what you want. |
