fake baby We bred our Yorkie In January. It did not take, they tied a few times at good times and all that. She did not end up pregnet. Now 9 weeks later she seems to think she gave birth to a little green toy, that she takes very good care of. Now she has milk. Should I be worried and take her back to the vet, or just let it take its corse. Thanks for the help. Jeanne |
This is called a false pregnancy or pseudo (sp) pregnancy and it does happen. Sometimes even if there was no attempt at breeding. I am not sure of all the specifics - I just know it can happen. I am not sure if there is anything that can be done - the only thing I would worry about is watching for infection and maybe if she could have problems with her teats if she has a lot of milk and no way to release it. I hope someone with first hand exp. will post and you can always call your vet for advice - never hurts to ask! Good luck :D |
It's been known to happen...I believe more so in yorkies since I'd never even heard of it till I got this breed. ANYWHO, some say to let her have her "babies" and some say to take them away. Maybe a more seasoned breeder would be better apt to answer this one. |
It happens in all breeds. My sisters cocker spaniel had a false preg. and then produced milk. About the same time two kittens were dumped at her house and the cocker nursed those 2 kittens. The kittens have grown and had their own babies but still nurse her cocker. (The cocker finally had her first litter so now she is producing milk again.) I don't know what to tell you to do. Maybe someone with more knowledge can help you out. :) |
fake baby I have never had to deal with a false pregnancy..but one girl who lost a litter "adopted" a pair of my daughters slippers..I let her have them for 2 days, then she got milk and refused to get out of the bed and leave the slippers...so I took them away and spent about a week with her non-stop. I carried her around, took her for walks, groomed and played with her, if I went out in the car, she went also...she bounced back by the end of the week. Good luck with your girl. |
My female Boxer did this and its very sad. hers was a stuffed squeaky toy, she loved on it and cleaned it and got very protective over it. she would sleep with it and push it up close to her so it could nurse. after a few days we had to take it from her.it was very sad. if she would even hear another toy being squeaked from one of my other dogs playing she would run back and forth thinking they had her baby.after we took it from her. it took a few days for her to stop looking for it. |

I've heard of false pregnancies but not adopting a stuffed animal and producing milk. I'm not sure if the vet needs to give her a shot to dry up the milk or not? We'll just keep bumping this to the top till someone with expereience picks up on it. |
My sister took her dog to the vet and he said to keep the kittens from nursing her so she would dry up on her own. I don't know about wether or not to take the "baby" from her though. :animal-pa |
I know of a few females to do this. some of them showed no milk at all and a few a little milk. But one I know of produced a lot of milk and had to get help in drying up the milk. If a female keeps producing milk , I would have her checked so she dont get infection and become hardened. with a lot of milk and no babies the milk can turn to large hard notts that are very very painfull. |
This is very sad for her - but I confess, your story of it, made me chuckle! I can just picture her nurturing her little green baby. It is probably the most loved green baby ever! :grin2: I do hope that your mama yorkie settles back into her normal routine soon and has no lasting issues. Keep us posted on her progress! |
shes still got her baby, we take it with us everywhere in her carry bag. She growls at other animals when they come near. At night the baby and Christy sleep with me on my pillow, this is to crazy! All my friends and family are getting a good laugh out of this one. They tell me my dog is high maintance (can you believe that) lol Jeanne |

I wish she were here, I have 2 little orphaned puppies that were "dropped" off when their mother died that I'm having to bottle feed around the clock, they sure could use a mother! I had a girl go through a false pregnancy and she mothered a green "space kitty" happy meal toy for about a week, and gave my boy Bruiser lots of extra "cleanings"..lol other than that she was fine. Milk went away, and life went back to normal. |
