fading puppy? My pups are now 11 days old, and doing very well except for one. There is a small male (he was 2.5oz at birth) he is not gaining any weight for the last 3 days. He has not lost any weight, and he does nurse, I am making sure of that. He moves and wiggles, he is just really small. He weighs 5 oz right now, is it normal for them to just maintain their weight for a few days? I have tried to bottle feed him, but he really isn't interested. Any ideas? |
Instead of bottle feeding him , have you tried to bottle feed the bigger one . It could give a chance to the little one . |
The smallest of my litter didn't gain any weight the first week either all the others did. It seem like he wasn't getting enough all the others were getting it. He nursed but in most cases it was only a little. I tried to bottle feed and but he would only take a little but come to find out that was all he needed and his tummy was full. I also bought one of those bottles with milk in it. He does a lot better with that type of bottle because he doesn't have to break suction for the bottle to breath. Anyways good luck with your little one. |
Thanks for the replys. I am relieved to hear that you had one not gaining as well. He really seems normal other than no gaining. I do take the bigger ones away several times a day for him to eat, so I know he is eating, maybe he just dosn't need as much. I will keep watching him and if he starts losing weight we will be running to the vet!!! |
I always supplement (bottle feed) the smaller pups from day one. Otherwise they get pushed aside and get weak. I would bottle feed him every 2 hrs. and wipe some Nutristat on his tongue. If he is too weak to bottle feed take him to the vet so he can be tube fed (unless you know how already), it is dangerous to do unless you know what you are doing. Good Luck |
Take the larger pups off mom now and then and let the little guy get some extra. The other info you were given is also great! :thumbup: Move him from teat to teat when he drains one out. Then put the others back in and let them stay there as they normally would. I have taken mom out for an hour or so, let her fill up, put her in with a weaker pup, let it nurse all it would. take her back out, for about 30 mins, then put them all back in with her. You'll get your little routine down pat soon. Supplementing with a bottle is also a good thing to do. But you want him to get as much of mother's milk as possilbe. |

Recently , I had a tiny puppy in a litter . I let her spend more time with the mother and she gained weight very fast and was able to continue her life as if she was the same weight as the others at birth . |
If the pup does not improve, get some liver and boil it, and give the puppy just the liquid using a dropper. Just until he seems strong enough to suckle good on his own. |
