Male breeding problems I have read a lot about the problems that can happen when breeding females on this forum - just curious about what kinds of problems males have? No, I am not thinking about breeding mine, he will be too big anyway when he is grown, 8-9 lbs., I am just curious. |
Well Let's See... If you're going to breed a male dog that's a pet, it will be very hard to keep him from marking in your house. And intact males that are not used enough become very frustrated. Hope this helps. |
Thanks for your reply - I was begining to think it was too difficult of a question which surprised me because you all seem so knowledgeable on here, although you didn't really answer it. Don't worry, like I said, I wasn't planning on breeding mine. Yes, I know male dogs will mark your house, this will happen with neutered ones as well. I just like to learn stuff. I have read on this website a little about outside ties (not exactly sure what that is), as well as keeping them calm during a tie so he doesn't get hurt (I understant that). I have also heard that they can get stuck together (what would you do if that happened?). Is there anything else. |

As far as them getting stuck that is called a tie so that's a good thing. What you want to do is keep them still so neither one gets hurt. As far as other problems the males penis isn't like a humans in the fact that a studs is an actual bone and it can get damaged. If the female moves runs around dragging the male while they are tied it she can cause cuts in his little feller as well. If the female wasn't tested she can give him std's. This is a hard question..thats all the answers I can think of for now.. I myself have mainly dealt with females so I hope this helps ya.. |
Yes, that was helpful. I was picturing "stuck" as some malfunction where they couldn't untie for some reason when they were done mating. Also, I didn't realize there was a bone in his penis, I like to know technical stuff like that (for some reason, not sure exactly why). I guess I don't like to ask stupid questions or give bad advice, so the more I can learn, the better I feel when I am talking to others. When I got into fish a couple years ago I read a lot about them, and I realized that in just a couple months I knew more about fish than a lot of people who had fish for many years, although I tend to focus only on the species I have, so I still have volumes to learn about many others. In fact at the beginning of this year I started both an Aquarium Club and a Real Estate Investors Club so people could get together and help and learn from each other, like this website. Now that we have our Benji, I want to learn as much as I can about them. Thanks for your response. |
Your welcome..and I am the same way. I know some of my questions may seem silly but that is the only way to learn something so NO i don't think your question was a stupid one. How do you know if you don't ask. I think it makes you a better pet owner the more you know.. :) |
Here is something else that is a little graphic. Once the tie is finished and they "disconnect", you need to watch the penis to ensure that it fully retracts and the sheath is pulled over it. If not, circulation can be cut off to the tip of the penis and cause a "red balloon". Not enough lubrication or hair that wraps around the shaft keeps the skin from covering it up again. If left in the "balloon" for extended amounts of time, the tip of the penis has a chance that it will need to be "amputated" since there is no circulation going there, the area will start to "die". |
Sometimes lubricating the penis will help. |

Oh yeah! I didn't finish! You can use lubricant and gently pull the skin back over the shaft or spray with sugar water and they'll lick themselves and it can retract that way. Hope it never happens to anyone. Happened to Chester once and I about had a heart attack at the quarter size red balloon! I do have a thread about the Red Balloon from last year on here. |
One thing we just gotta learn...trust the boy to decide when the female is ready is NOT doing AI. One of my studs was lent for studding and the slide the vet did said female was ready! I could not get a tie with them here so I allowed him to go visit his new girlfriend. The tests were done on a Wed., the try was on Sunday, AI tried on Mon and Tues. Wed, he knew and did the job himself. I mean we sweated bullets. Then just to show off he tied again all by himself on a Friday.. Had a female here tonight that should have been sooooooooo ready..NOT! Didn't flag, position herself or the usual things. I let my boy go home and we will see what he does and when he does it. They do have a way of making total sillies out of us.. |
