cost for breeding
 

In reading a lot of the threads regarding breeding I think that this may be more than I am willing to take on...for one litter. I don't want to put my dog in danger and it sounds really expensive. Can someone provide me with a general idea of expenses? I know that it can be different in different areas however I am just looking for some ideas. I am thinking it would be cheaper and easier on my nerves to buy my daughter a dog!! Plus as I said I don't want to hurt my little baby in any way.

To answer your question bluntly, yes, it would be cheaper and less worrysome to buy your daughter a dog. Plus, you seem to be having doubts on issues other than just the expense side. Breeding...even just once, is a very serious process that you should only partake in if you are COMPLETELY comfortable.

To answer your other question, here are some of the expenses you will have:
* Stud fee if you don't own the stud. Including time and research to find the right match, payment to the stud owner, which is usually several hundred dollars or a pup from the litter.
* Pre-breeding test on the female to tests for disease/problems that may be passed to the litter.
* Pre-natal care/vet bills for the mom...checkups, x-rays etc.
* Whelping supplies
* Depending on your situation, you will have to have time off from work to be with the mother during labor and the following days.
* Vet checks/vaccinations/tail docking for the pups. They will probably have at least 3 vet trips before they leave you.
* Also, you have to prepare for the unfortunate situations that can occur...a c-section should the mother have problems...hundreds as it is, triple if it occurs after vet hours, health issues with any of the pups that require treatment or even surgery, and problems that would require the bottle feeding of the pups, which is around the clock care, feeding every few hours, day and night

It is alot to consider and take on, but rewarding nevertheless if you are willing to fully dedicate yourself to it. :)

Yes you are correct it is not the money. I am just concerned about my baby and her health and wefare. It would be an exciting adventure but I don't want to danger her in any way. She is my best friend. I had two other yorkies that died from snake bites and can't bear to go through another heart break. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Snakebites?! OMG, that is horrible. I know how snakes pop up here everywhere, I can only imagine how bad it must be where you are in an area where they are more prevelant. Scary stuff.
I am glad I could help. Really, you do have to prepare for every possible situation and it does wear on you. If your girl is as great as you say she is, and I don't doubt you are right, I can see why you would want more of her. You are not the only one who feels that way. ;)

It took me 4 years to get another yorkie, I was just heartbroken. I thought my last yorkie was the love of my life and then I got Cocoa! Yes I would like another like her but I read that is just not always the case. And yorkies tend to have a lot of the same personalities somewhat. So when My daughter is ready we will look into getting her one.

I must say, I have to give you big Kudos and respect for examining all aspects of the situation and taking the time to try to find the best solution for you and your girl, regardless of what decision you make in the end. It is too often that you see people just considering and jumping in to something all at once without any research at all. I am sure that whatever you decide will be the best choice and you will not regret taking the time to consider all things involved.
If and when you do look for your daughter a little furball, you have some great breeders in your area that I know you would love and that would be more than willing to help you with finding her the perfect little friend. :)

Snakebites? Oh wow, would you mind explaining more on how that happened? I'm sorry if I'm bringing up bad memories, but I am really intrigued by what you said. I am also sorry for the loss of your past yorkies.

I would imagine snakes can be a problem in Arizona. You would not think them a problem in Maryland, but my friend Judy had a pregnant girl bit by a snake. Luckily, she survived and delivered a healthy litter. We had alot of black snakes in MD...
When I was a teen, we had snakes to sorry about here in FLroida, some got in the house..so far I have not seen any.

My friend lives in Marathon FL and her 2.5 pound Boomer was killed from a poisonous frog bite. The frog also got his sister but she was bigger and able to recover. Needless to say, my friend is still devastated over his loss. Here in Ohio we have to worry about hawks.

Now I am scared.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I guess that's one reason why we have so many. When you decide to get another......Oh, I'm probably going to get in trouble for this............look for a home breeder. I can almost guarantee you will get a pup that is highly socialized with a great personality. Like kids, their upbringing has a lot to do with it. Here, our pups are brought up in our family room and are socialized from the time they can crawl out of the cage on their own. They are played with all the time and spoiled rotten. Good luck on your search when you're ready to get another yorkie.

Oh my goodness cannot imagine. We have rattlers around here well about an hour away. I am a snake lover though all we have here is gardners and water snakes in the river but cool non the less. Have tried to get a snake as a pet like a grass snake but hubby is terrified of them but me and the boys love'm

My first yorkie was outside when the sun was going down, which is when the snakes like to come out. I was in Phoenix and my daughter forgot to let her back in right away. Somehow there was a snake in the yard and it bit my little dog. My kids called me in phoenix and said we think Max has been bit by a snake or got into one of the poisonous frogs!! I told them to take him to the tub and rinse his mouth out as best they could in case it was a frog. By the time I got back to Tucson he was gone...worst night ever. Then I purchased a litter mate and he too was bit, this was over a holiday weekend and since he was much bigger it took 3 days of IV and care before he died. I thought I could never have another little dog again, so after all of this tragedy I waited till my husband changed our fence and then poisonous got my baby. She is not allowed outside (without me) and we have not seen one rattle snake since the fence was changed. It was an ordeal that was so awful to watch and be a part of.
