Bottle Feeding
 
My daughters Yorkie had four males. They are all doing great. One has bilateral cleft lip. Very little to No palate involvement. I have been helping her feed him with an eye-dropper every two hours and he seems to be doing well. He is at least sustaining his weight. The vet did not give him much hope but he is for a re-check tomorrow. My question is has anyone on here ever given their pups regular infant formula? We live in a small town and do not have a Pet Store so pet formula is not readily available. I know that I can ask the vet but I feel that there is more experience here on this forum. The vet can only offer advice that he has often learned over his years of practise.

I don't recommend baby formula! I use milk replacer for puppies along with diluted goat milk. (Esbilac for pups)


I hope the little guy is doing ok, but there is little hope for cleft as advanced as you described. I do wish him the best and hope he pulls through. Best wishes, and the pups are in my prayers.

Oops, forgot to say...with goats milk dilute it one can milk to one can warm water. I just noticed after re-reading that you are not close to a store with the supplies you need.

here is a homemade formula
1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup water
1 tablespoon honey or karo syrup
1 egg yolk

or this one
10 oz. of canned evaporated milk or goats milk (not pasteurized cows milk - this will cause scow ers - dogs cannot drink normal cows milk)
3 oz. sterilized water (baby water or boiled water) this is not needed if using goats milk
1 raw egg yolk
1 tablespoons regular mayonnaise (optional)
1 cup of whole yogurt (avoid skim or fat free)

do not use infant formula or cows milk!!!

I put the formula in ice trays and freeze it to make small amounts. Then, I pour the frozen clumps into plastic bags and it will last forever in the freezer. Just take out one cube at a time, or 2 or however many you need, and warm it and use it. That way, you do not waste formula.
I hope your babies do well. I am always leary about trying to keep a defective puppy alive...remember you are doing your best and whatever the outcome, it had to be. I lost a wee one last 2 weeks ago, and it was hard but I expected that after 48 hours the puppy would be really hard to keep alive.
You will do fine with those babies..Keep us posted..
