Breeding Questions Is it ethical, or healthy if a breeder breeds two puppies such as a maltese and a yorkie, or a yorkie and a chi, etc. I'm wondering in general because there have been a lot of puppies in my area that are mixed breed. Will there be any health problems with these mixed or crossed pups? I read that they are actually less prone to diseases? If someone can correct me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. |

Yeah, I never really understood the purpose of mix-breeding. Seems like it just creates expensive mutts. Sorry, but that's just my feeling about it. :) |
Something that I've heard and maybe someone can clear up is that if you breed one type of dog (let's say a male Yorkie) to another (let's go with a female Poodle- Yorkipoos) for a long enough time that the bitch won't stick when you try to breed her back to her own kind. I'm not saying that this is true just wondering if anybody knows. And before anybody else starts hopping on the band wagon about how unethical it is to mix breeds. Let's not forget where our beloved Yorkies derived from.We have a cross breed of Skye, Paisley, and Clydesdale terriers. So if people weren't mixing things up a little some where we wouldn't have our sweet little babies today. A lot of breed that we do have now are actually made by mixing and matching. The only difference is when they were doing this a hundred or more years ago, they were trying to derive a dog with a specific purpose. ie our Yorkies were suppose to catch rats and mice (not my princess). Today people are just doing is to make cute things to stick in a purse. |
mixing It is very popular to mix the breeds...it is not an unhealthy thing to do..unethical, yes I think it is..my reasoning being..a breeder should strive to breed to the standard of the breed. You can not mix two breeds and adher to the standard of each breed. Each mixed breed that is bought, is one less mixed breed adopted from the pound. JMO |
There was a tremendous amount of thought and consideration that went into the decision to use the breeds that were used to develop our beloved Yorkies for specific working purposes. As I see it, mixing breeds now is just to make money and no new breeds are being developed in a well-thoughtout, methodical manner when these different mixed breeds are being marketed. JMO |

I have a dear friend of over 20 + years who is totally in love with y-poos and breeds them. I don't have a problem with what she does as it is her decision and her likes. After many years of being in yorkies, I have found that at this point in time I could only contribute to the rearing of a pure bred. I will admit that my views on this were much different in the past. My quest to raise only quality pure bred yorkies has really opened my eyes though. It does not mean that I look down on anyone who fancies a mix breed. I'm too open minded for that. However, I do and will always favor a pure bred. |
I too have an open mind about mix breeding....I love the look of several of the hybrid breeds I have seen lately and I just watched Lady and the Tramp!! I know it's "just a movie" but those two made beautiful babies and in my opinion you can make the argument that EVERY dog that is bred or produced, whether purebred or mixed, means one less dog (whether purebred of mixed) rescued from the shelter. Either you are against breeding due to over population or you are in favor of it because it is a worthy hobby. It is discriminatory to say that only those breeding purebreds are involved in a worthy hobby. In my opinion that thinking is unfair. |
