studding question I know it is possible for a female to become pregnant without a tie, I guess my question is how possible? The female has been tested and is ready, my male has sired two litters so he is proven, they are connecting just not staying connected. How common is this and what might the causes be? I have let him just keep going till he is no longer interested, I guess I don't want to continue to breed this female thinking that because there is no tie nothing is happening and then getting puppies that are several days behind in development. Any information would be welcomed, I am wondering if this might be an indicator of a problem with my male or if it is a common occurance when breeding. He tied with the first two females without any problem. Thanks Melanie |
if theyve tied, duration doesnt matter, if he has actually released sperm you would see a small amount of fluid on the floor when he pulls out. If thats the case then you were most likely successful. I dont believe its a problem with the female, if she is a virgin sometimes they will be less cooperative and if the male is proven and had actually entered her I would mark the date and keep watching for signs. Sometimes a virgin female will move about a lot thats why its important to be on the floor with them to assist if needed. hope this helps |
thank you for such a quick response!! I did hold the female several times, and I also let them try without my assistance just to see if that would work as well. I didn't see anything dripping on the floor (hows that for descriptive? :D ) but I also could have missed it I guess. My male wears belly bands and I am wondering if it could be a UTI or something? Maybe I am overthinking the whole thing :( |
breeding Your problem is not unusal..the female may be too small for full penetration. She may be taller or short and he is not on target. Lubricate female well and help him guide him in, hold him once he is in..even if they are not able to tie if you hold him in, it most always takes...good luck...and I apologize to non-breeders. |
Thank you for responding. She is coming again tommorow, so I will try your suggestions and see what happens. I can't wait to see my husbands reaction when I tell him to hold her while I try and help Dash!! :D This is sooooo not his thing!!lol |
I wouldn't worry about stopping them to make sure the pups are developed. Your girl will more than likely carry for around 63 days, and (some one can correct me if I'm wrong) the babies can survive if they are only 57 days along. So if your bitch conceived a baby on the first time and then again 6 days later all of the babies should be okay if she carries 63 days. Also if there are no pups next time you might want to try AI. |
You don't have to have a conected tie in order to impregnate. |
We had a definate connection this morning and I did hold him in place for several minutes, so hopefully we will be succesful. Thank you for all the suggestions they obviously worked!!! Is the "not staying tied" a common thing? I could tell today that he actually "finished" as he was very swollen and took about 15 minutes to recover whereas before he just would try but never had the recovery period. (sorry to anyone who finds this TMI) Would this simply be the female being to small to completely accomodate him? He is about the same size height wise as she is, but he has a much smaller frame, would that make a difference? I want to be an informed breeder so all information is appreciated. Thanks Melanie |
male The female might be a touch tight...once she has a litter it should correct itself..and perhaps another breeding today or tomorrow...good luck |
You asked about the UTI. I had asked my vet about that too. My male Yorkie wears a belly band in the house all the time. He said that it shouldn't give a dog a UTI. |
Rainy, I would disagree with your vet, it all depends on how diligent one is about changing the pad and keeping him clean and dry, UTI is bacterial and if the boy is not wiped often and kept dry a build up can happen. When I use them I wipe them down often with an unscented baby wipe and let them air dry before putting a new pad and band on. |
