Breeder opinions........ At what age do you consider it safe to breed your bitch? Would you ever breed during 1st heat and how often do you breed from litter to litter? How do you determine when it is time for the mum to retire? Thanks for your info! |
I don't think its ever safe to breed the first heat. Some girls are still puppies themselves then. I think second or 3rd even is better. Retiring to me is based on a dog to dog basis. At 5 yrs old, I start taking this into consideration. I think that studs can be involved much longer in a program than females. |
I cannot say "never" but I sure as heck would never plan a litter at the first heat cycle. Maybe if I had a 15 poud dog whose first heat cycle was at 15 months, I would consider it. As you can guess from the weights I have quoted, you know I am not talking about Yorkies or Biewers.. |
Thanks for the info, its helpful information for those considering to breed, at least one of many areas that should be researched. |
I think it depends on the individual dog. Mine was 1 1/2 when I bred her for the first time and it was her second heat. I don't intend to breed her on back to back heats, as I feel she needs time to "recover" for lack of better term. I worked with a breeder that would breed back to back heats because her female only came into heat every 10 months. She skipped the first, bred the second two, skipped the next and is breeding the next 2, then retiring the female. |
